I've been to events that feature the lowest common denominator in the crowd at Roller Derby, Wrestling and pre season NFL. Nobody was fighting.

You can barely get an NFL crowd to cheer without exhortations from a scoreboard telling them to do so. The average crowd at, say, a NY Giants game is pretty close to Bernstein's platonic ideal of fandom. How much less enthusiasm does he want?

It's the nakedly self-interested mendacity of it that bugs me. He self-identifies as liberal, but that's clearly an affectation; it's really only true in the case of issues like reproductive rights and gay marriage, which allow him to be fashionably progressive but don't require any sort of critical thinking or hard work or personal sacrifice on his part. Presented with an issue of any nuance--labor disputes, economic inequality, financial reform--he defaults to an ideology of Social Darwinism so gleefully malicious it would make Jay Gould cringe. He can talk up Obama and mock rural gomers and titter at birthers all he wants. Guy's a garden-variety country club Republican.

That would be a great WYC? entry, Dave. You should call or email that on Thursday.

There's not a single-game Bears ticket below $100, at least not from the box office. That's not counting Ticketmaster surcharges, parking, or gas. If white trash is descending upon Soldier Field so they can unlock the "wildness" they've amassed through years of economic suffering, they must really save on groceries during the week.

Every game sells out easily. I'd say the tickets should be more expensive.

In your opinion, what destroyed the taste?

I agree it wasn't "hicks" that made a mess of it, I'm just curious.

Not surprising BernSTINE would go this thread in his "thinking," though.

No. Youth flash mobs synchronized to the sounds of Lil Wayne dancing around while passing blunts and shooting off hand guns.
