My attempt at a Mini Ditka thread.

Hurricane Sandy is on a crash course to your doorstep. Would you - or could you - evacuate?

Many who fled from Hurricane Irene are choosing to stay-put this time around.

I would only leave if I lived on a single level building on the low ground. I'd be prepared to have enough food/water to make it a week or so. Since I'm staying home there will be enough blankets to stay warm at night. It is still early enough in the season that the temps will be above freezing at night. Putting the ol' Weber grill on the roof and having a cookout all week. Hello no, I'm not going from Rockaway to Piscataway to be a refugee for a week.

My wife and I bought a bunch of food, batteries, etc and are chilling, but we are 45 minutes inland. I would definitely evacuate if we were on the coast. The biggest thing we have to worry about inland is power outage. The wind is gusting here, but they aren't predicting structural damage inland, with the exception of damage caused by downed trees.

Misinformed Man Riding Out Storm In Bathtub Filled With Batteries

BROOKLYN, NY—Saying that “you can’t be too prepared,” Brooklyn resident and seriously misinformed man Jason Randolph told reporters today he plans to get through Hurricane Sandy by riding out the storm in a bathtub full of batteries. “With a storm of this magnitude, safety is key, so I’ve made sure I’m prepared by first filling my sink with flashlights and then climbing into a tub full of AA batteries,” the woefully misled man said as he burrowed beneath the pile of Duracells. “The more precautions you take, the better off you are. That’s why I’ve taped dozens of cans of soup to the windows and weighed down all my possessions with sandbags.” At press time, a hungry Randolph was planning to snack on some of the candles he had stocked his pantry with.

We are locked and loaded right now. There has been no evacuation order, but if we lose power and my classes are cancelled for the rest of the week, we are going to go out west. We've been told if we lose power, we will probably be without it for over a week.

Mitt Romney issued a statement, advising everyone on the East coast to evacuate to their 2nd or 3rd residence.

A bunch of people on Staten Island are trapped in their attics or on their roofs. They were told to evacuate ahead of time. Now they can't get help. Guess they should have listened.

If I may channel shakes here for a minute, if you are in a mandatory evacuation zone and you don't evacuate you are an idiot.

There is a reason it's called a mandatory evacuation. The fact that your house wasn't destroyed before doesn't matter.

I know everyone can't do this, but I would take a mini vacation. Not EVACUATE! The Word conjurs up the notion that days of notice were not provided!

Even if you stay behind, you need to load up on food, water, gas...maybe bullets???...but I figure you need to drop a few hundos on loading up anyway....so why not get in your car, book a room in upper NY and drive away...instead of being the idiot on CNN saying you didnt know it was going to be so bad!!!!!

When I know a huge snowstorm is coming in, I gas up the car, I buy some extra food and have a generator that if needed, would be active.

Living on a coast cost extra money and this is one of those costs.

Sure they can. It's not that expensive to leave your house. There were buses running up until Sunday at 7pm across the whole region, and those who lived in a mandatory evacuation zone chose to live in a mandatory evacuation zone.

There is a reason that we didn't get a place directly on the coast. Anyone who chooses to do so should have an adequate plan for things when the mandatory evacuation begins.

It can be rather expensive to leave your house, especially on a moment's notice and for a week or longer.

It can be. It doesn't have to be. They have shelters open. Now, living in a shelter sucks, but if that is your concern don't live a few blocks away from the beach if you can't afford to evacuate or if you don't have friends you can stay with.

This also wasn't a moments notice. I started my preparations for the storm that didn't get bad until Monday on Thursday.

Once again, it's a mandatory evacuation zone, and it was perfectly clear to everyone who moved there that it was in a zone that would have a hurricane.

I just view it as the cost of living in your house. If you want to live in paradise, and walk from your house to a boardwalk, then have enough money to spend a week in a hotel room, or you have to go to a shelter.

There really is no argument for staying in your house when you are in a mandatory evacuation zone, and as we learned, there is a good reason why they are mandatory. It just sucks that some of the people who died in this did because they were attempting to save those who ignored the evacuation order.

From what I heard many "squatters" decided to stay-put based on lessons learned from Hurricane Hugo. There are many stories about how homes were left with minor damage while their residents found harder times in the "safe zones". Has there been anything similar to that in this case?

Where did you hear that? Hurricane Hugo was in 1989. I doubt it was relevant. Most of the people that stayed did it because "Hurricane Irene wasn't that bad".

However, the answer is no. Much of the "mandatory evacuation zone" saw significant damage.

Even as early as Saturday morning, basically all television and radio was saying that the worst case scenario is happening. Anyone who stayed because of Hurricane Hugo was, as shakes would say, an idiot.

My mistake, I meant Irene.
