At my school we bring the firemen in on the first day of school to remind the kids to go home when the day is over.

While I disgaree with your premise ("good areas" = "good" parenting/"good" students is laughably inaccurate), your statement is unintentionally ironic and comedic.
"What about in areas where the kids are already in school on the first day on their own? They don't send in the firemen (or anyone else) to remind them to get to school on the first day?!?!"

Um. What? :|

There are good, quality, involved parents in every socio-economic group of every area in the state. And there are bad, un-involved and generally uncaring parents in every socio-economic group of every area of the state as well.

They only send the firemen into certain areas.

I see you do not live in the city. Have you ever?

Probably the areas that are on fire would be my guess.

You know Spanky, I hate to agree with you. But damn it, I just can't help it this time.

Good post.

I lived in Garfield Ridge at 59th & Naragansett for a time after college. Not sure what that has to do with anything though.

Stop it with the fireman thing. You have no idea what you're talking about. It's clear.
And despite what you think, I'm guessing the vast majority of.......everybody?........thinks it's ok for the community to pitch in and help get kids to school.

Again....still waiting for one single downside to getting the kids in school. Until then, maybe just stop.

Okay, you lived for a "time". I am not saying it is bad. What is bad is for a broke city spending money, overtime mind you, to do something that people should od themselves. Not only that but it is not done on a citywide program but only done to specific areas.

Your commenting on City issues is one of the problems I have with this board. People who do not live,or even hardly venture to the city making comments like they know what goes on. I do not comment when people talk about suburban problems because I never lived in one. You have no idea how things work in the city. Where I was born and grew up and lived for most of my life you had one of three jobs:Policeman,Fireman or garbageman.

You live in...in...where do you live again? Not Chicago. You lived in Chicago for "most of your life"? How old are you again? Old, right?

Guess who lives in Garfield Ridge? Policeman, fireman, and park district employees.
