Can the Republican party take these last two elections as a sign, and change their voter base? If I were them, I would trade the religious right for Hispanics and single women in a heartbeat. I think they would still lock up the south anyway, and they would fair much better in all the swing states. And it wouldn't be hard. Just run a candidate that is pro-choice, and open to immigration reform.

I'm sure I'm missing something in this calculus.

You would think these smart business men would be able to understand math when it comes to the demographics in this country. Unfortunately republicans are stubborn and stuck in the past. Winning elections by disregarding women and minorities is so 1988. I'm really curious how they're going to pivot or if they will.

I think they know the demographics, but they figured if the economy remained in the tank, they could eek out one more election the old-fashioned way. If the economy hadn't shown signs of recovery (real or not), it probably would have worked.

As an old white male I have often wondered the same thing and the solution seems simple: the GOP should stick to the two main issues --The economy and foreign policy -- and quit muddying the waters with all the other distracting anti-stuff, like gay marriage, abortion and immigration. Abortion is legal and that won't change and the others should be left to the states to deal with.

I have watched as the democratic party re courted the white ethnic vote in Clinton's first run after Reagan had taken them from the party. After Clinton, the national Democratic party pretty much abandoned attempts to maintain the relationship. In this particular election it seemed like Obama was almost purposely neglectful with several missteps towards eastern europe and the dominant religion of the area without apology while Romney went on a tour in the region. It is completely bizarre to me that you would abandon a group that really is inclined to vote in your direction.

The other bizarre political reality to me is the lack of synergy between the white and black evangelical vote. Now, obviously this election is unique but generally, there is a huge portion of the african american vote that is both religious and conservative. It would seem to me like a synergy would be easy to achieve.

Or you could say there are lots of anti discrimination laws on the books and the constitution says that they are not second class citizens. I do not understand why the feds in elections promise any of these ancillary things like more protections? They simply need to let this stuff work through courts. Ultimately, even a conservative supreme court can't rule against equal protection for all.
