I'm sure many of you have been on a busy multi-lane roadway featuring these left turn lanes running down the middle. I'm just as sure that many of you have come up behind a guy turning left without moving into the dual lane. It would seem as if the douchebag is the driver who refuses to move into the turn lane. However, it happens so often that there is an obvious design flaw in the lane. It can't be that so many people are that stupid. There is a reason for so much reluctance in using those lanes. My guess is that people don't want to cross the solid yellow line as they have been taught not to cross their entire lives. Why the fuck is there a solid yellow line?

Haven't you ever seen a dual left turn lane? You're probably one of the goofs that refuses to use it.

Yeah, what?

Edit: I don't typically have any problems with the dual left turn lane I use every day. Others around me don't seem to have an issue either.

Not sure I've seen a driver guilty of doing this. So you're saying there are people turning left in the two left turn lanes, and there's a jamoke in the third lane (straight lane) waiting to turn left as well?

no, I think hes talking about a shared turn lane for traffic going in opposite directions. yes these are kind of problematic at times.

I believe he should have used the term "shared turn lanes". The ones that go in both directions and you have to play a game of chicken with the cars coming the other way.

No, I think he means the left turn lane in the middle that is used by both directions of traffic.

I've never had that problem since most of the time the other guy is making his left from out in the middle of traffic. But you're right, shared lane is probably the proper term.

I think the solid yellow line signifies that drivers can't use that center lane to pass another driver.

There is no signage or pavement marking that will make women, old people, or asians good drivers.

Ahh yes, gotcha now. Agreed. To hell with those morons/pussies who won't get in that lane. Make sure no one is coming from behind and break the mustard.

Right?

Yeah, is it not your experience that there is widespread reluctance to move into the shared lane?

When I'm behind one of them I feel exactly the same way. But it happens so often I have to believe the flaw is in the design rather than the users. I think the solid yellow is the issue.

Think the median in front of Portillo's, IMU. The one with the police presence.

I've never encountered any issues with dual turning lanes. I have no problem with their existence.

I'm sure that's correct, but it also has the unintended consequence of making many people reluctant to cross to make a proper left.

Yes, well clearly your IQ is above 75, so it wouldn't affect you in any way.

I don't even know if those lanes exist in the city. These are a creation of the great minds in the outer cultural meccas like Skokie and Schaumburg.

I haven't seen that to be the case. Of course, I don't drive much in the City.

Yeah, but damnit if I haven't turned left into that place many times without issue.

Yeah that's honestly the worst one I've regularly seen and it's not terribly difficult to navigate in or out of.

You've never seen anyone stop and make a left without moving into that dual turn lane?
