You've never seen anyone stop and make a left without moving into that dual turn lane?

I personally haven't. No.

Why is it the shared turn lanes fault when 99% of drivers know how to use it? Just DB the drivers who don't.

They do.

I've never seen an issue because in the areas where they are in the city, people don't pay attention to rules of the road anyway.

out here in the sticks it happens far far too often. People use that lane to pull out of places that they shouldn't be able to pull out of due to four lanes of heavy traffic. It further messes things up.

I do that all the time. I don't think it's illegal. It is considered another lane. You just aren't allowed to drive on it for long stretches. It would be like pulling into a right turn lane and then merging over.

Northwest suburban veterans (CH most likely) might be familiar with the "turn lane" on Palatine Road between Rand Rd. and Windsor Rd. You have people making U-turns on Palatine, going straight to go to Olive Garden or enter the Ivy Hill neighborhood. Madness.

What city streets have them, Peeps? Parts of Ashland maybe? Usually a city street has a giant planter that obscures one's vision. That's a whole 'nother douchebag.

Exactly. CoF's example sounds more like a matter where the drivers are pulling out from. The usage of the lane isn't the issue.

I make a U-turn into Corner Bakery to go back west towards Palatine

That intersection is a cluster F

Pulaski has them when you get south of 79th.

I've seen them on Archer between Pulaski and Harlem as well.

I'm with you JORR, these fucking things are more trouble then they are worth. People flip on their turn signal and slow down and then wait until the very last moment to cut in the center and then make the turn. The fucking lanes exist to not slow up traffic on your left hand turn. Stupid motherfuckers....

And to anyone who said they use them as a merging lane when turning onto the street, I hope you get a pimple on the inside of your nostril.

uh...I didn't say it was illegal. the problem is people pulling into them, then either sitting there for 3-4 minutes or driving slowly along for a good 1/4 mile. Seen both happen all the time on 38.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I like the current version of Journey.

I dont dislike Journey but given the choice of only one or the other I think Boston wins even though your hands would be raw and bleeding from clapping along with all their songs.

I see it happen enough that I have to believe it's a design flaw. If you make a product you think is great but a lot of people can't figure out how to use it, I'd posit the fault lies with the product. I believe the solid yellow line (as illustrated clearly in one of IMU's posts) renders the concept of crossing into the middle counter-intuitive for many.

It's not a design flaw, in most cases it is a function of a road widening that has multiple ingress/egress points for existing businesses. The alternative is a single turning point at a major intersection then a frontage road or circle drive....think Malls or newly developed major shopping areas.

You just been Civil Enginerded.

I understand the purpose of the lane, Doug. It would actually work well if drivers used it properly. I don't think the flaw is in the layout itself but rather in the striping. You're suddenly asking people to cross a solid yellow. They can see the turn arrow but they also see the solid line. Not all drivers are as savvy as Big Chicagoan. So many of them sort of go in there but not all the way and leave half the car sticking out into the traffic lane. They're often very tentative when entering that center turning area. I have to believe the striping is the issue. As Ugie pointed out, I think the designers erred on the side of caution by not making the outside line broken, as they probably figured people would then think it was okay to go in there to pass. But I can hardly drive west on Dempster from the Evanston border without someone making a half-assed left in front of me without fully going into the center.

i've seen it happen but not enough to really bug me. what drives me nuts worse:

1. 4 way stops. no one ever gets this shit right.

2. the intersection of rt. 83 and north ave. fuck you, 10 second green lights.

3. people who don't turn on red when they can (this was a golden b&b tournament of bad nomination)

4. people who slam on their brakes at yellow lights.

5. lincoln fucking square. i hate that goddamn area if i'm driving in it. good god.
