Sure. WAR is an effort to put a value on performance. It's a good enough effort. But I don't think we're bound by it. It isn't like homeruns. Your guy hits more homers than my guy over enough time, it's safe to say he's a better homerun hitter. There's a lot more noise in a calculation like WAR. It isn't as simple as saying a guy with a 3.5 was "better" than a guy with a 2.8.

The human brain would absolutely dominate the past though. That's why I didn't even bring it up.

Ask a computer "Did I make the right choice of college or degree?" and the answer would be terrible. Most people could answer that after about 5 minutes of discussion.

Ok then 10 days. 9,8 whatever. I'm going with the predictive models over JORR. I don't believe they are fact, I don't believe they are always right. But I believe they will be better predictions over time compared to JORR.

The point is that not all models are good. 10 day models are barely adequate, and every day less becomes more accurate.

The 14 day model is an answer to your "Give me the best model" stance. The best 14 day model isn't even worth paying attention to, and that's why you never see a 14 day forecast.

Not necessarily, but when the team is in the heat of a playoff chase and a guy has a great month and helps propel his team to a playoff birth, its gotta be a bigger plus for him than a guy who had a poor september.

Sure, but you know as well as I do that when you are playing a game and you are tied for the division lead in September, that is a lot more pressure packed than playing with a 1 game defecit on May 15th.

It is a season long award. And for the season, Miggy lead the league in hitting, home runs, and RBI. The MVP for 2012 in the AL was given to the right guy.

Really? That is the best hitter at a given position. Its very possible to win a lot of sliver sluggers by being a very good, all star caliber player at say catcher, but never come close to winning an MVP award

I think this is a big part of the differing viewpoints. Of course, what you're saying, Chris, is absolutely true. The game in April has the same value as the game in September. But I would make the same argument regarding what I call "losing-type" pitchers with low ERAs. In baseball, more than in any other sport, the "when" of things is absolutely crucial.

A ball of the wall for a triple with no one on and where the hitter subsequently fails to score almost might just as well never have occurred. While that same triple with two men on in a one run game is the stuff heroes are made of. I'm fully aware that overwhelming evidence suggests that the "when" is nearly random and luck plays a big part. But I don't think we should discount luck. I'll take Aaron Sele on my team anytime.
