You don't cross a double yellow....simple. Not a design flaw, a human idiocy flaw.

Ive had instances where Ive had to play chicken with someone in the shared turning lane. Sometimes they just keep pulling up way beyond the line.

You're not supposed to cross a solid yellow on your side, are you? But suddenly we're asking people to cross one to enter that shared turn lane.

Look, I know how to use the damn thing. I just see so many people who are so tentative about it, I doubt that so many people are "idiots."

Also to my point, if you Google "solid yellow line" you'll get various and myriad answers about what it means. So obviously there is rather widespread confusion. I get that a broken yellow line suggests that passing there is safe (when in this case it is not, hence the solid yellow) but there has to be a reason so many people are reluctant to move into that middle lane with authority and my best guess is the striping.

You can be as right as you want but when a large part of the world disagrees you're wrong regardless. It's like that sculptor standing on Michigan Avenue and insisting his work is called "Cloud Gate".

I guess it depends on what we mean by idiots. If something that seems simple to you and me isn't so simple for, let's say, 20% of the other users, then maybe it isn't so simple after all.

In this case, my personal experience is that there is a lot of uncertainty regarding that shared lane. Of course, I may be thin-slicing the matter and it's just my bad luck to end up near the tiny percentage of true morons that can't grasp the concept, but I really doubt that. I think a more logical belief is that something is causing the uncertainty rather than the relative lack of brain power of the uncertain and my guess is that it's the solid yellow line that seems prohibitive to them.

You're encountering patented morons.

I can't really say what's going through their heads, but it appears to happen enough that I'm not going to condemn the uncertain users.

You are allowed to cross a single solid line regardless of color...you are not allowed to cross a double yellow line.

It is really quite simple.

I'm with JORR on this one. Too confusing for your average idiot to figure out. Proper turn lanes (one direction) should be marked. It's kind of like the Wild West of the highway, every man for himself.

Not quite. Safety first always. If unsure always use caution and give the right of way to the other driver. Common courtesy. You are not playing bumper cars with the others on the road. You are not in that big of a fuggin hurry. If you are leave 10 min. early.

I know that. If you didn't cross a solid line, you could never make a left turn. But you and IMU and I aren't the only drivers on the road. There are old ladies and people that just don't drive much and they're all out there with us. I guess we can call them idiots if we want. But there are enough of them that need to turn left and see that giant lane with the arrows pointing left, and yet are reluctant to pull in there. I don't think that is simply resulting from their sheer idiocy.

Ugh...As I stated earlier, it is nearly impossible to have dedicated turn lanes in the areas that have the common turn lane as a result of the existing infrastructure. What do you do when a two business entrances are exactly opposite of one another, perpendicular to the traffic flow? You have a common turn lane...
If you guys want to pay for all this construction and stripping, then start sending IDOT and your local Highway Department half of your paycheck.

Ultimately, people being timid about the common turn lanes is a result of not knowing the rules of the road.

When you guys pass the Transportation discipline on the PE Exam, let me know... :P

Yeah, I'm sure that's right, but enough of them are ignorant that it is a problem. Like I pointed out, Google "solid yellow line" and you'll find many different answers about its meaning. Rules and customs are often two different things. For example, pedestrians have always had the right-of-way over traffic at a crosswalk. But try walking out into one on Western Avenue and you're going to get killed. Drivers just won't honor the rules. In fact, I'm sure that someone in this forum will insist the idea of stopping 40 mph traffic on Western Avenue for a pedestrian crossing the street at a non-controlled intersection is absurd, regardless of the fact that it's the law. The answer seems to be to put up those signs explicitly pointing out the crosswalk with provisional stop signs based upon the presence of pedestrians at every intersection. The answer is seemingly worse than the problem, as now many drivers will stop regardless of whether pedestrians are present or not and many others will simply speed through without looking at all.

Maybe you bright civil engineers shouldn't have allowed so many curb cuts in the first place. :-P

And there you have your answer. It's a cheap fix and not too many people are killed so it's good enough.

Maybe we shouldn't have urban sprawl and commercial development then either.

I don't need to google solid yellow line, because I know what it means.

I wasn't suggesting you Google it to discover its meaning. The point is many people are unclear about what it means.

I love this thread because I hate center turning lanes so much.

I don't even want to know what these people do when confronted with a roundabout.

Take drive to Golf and Wolf and find out. Thankfully, there aren't many other roundabouts in the Chicago area.

Fuck me... there is a roundabout in Valpo and you would think that people were lobotomized the moment they approach it.

I would love it if people could get on board, it keeps the traffic moving so smoothly.

Wisconsin DOT has been installing roundabouts all along I-43. There is one at Bluemound Road. When you see them in Chicago neighborhoods, those are for traffic calming so people don't go 40mph. No different than speed humps.

There is one in Lake County that I know of at Riverwoods and Everett Road. Lake County central permit facility also installed one in the main lot.

What about the one at Golf and Wolf? Maybe that isn't properly called a roundabout, but it is some kind of similar fuckery.

That is a proper roundabout. Fortunately I only deal with it before 6:00 am on the way to a round of golf.

This country needs more roundabouts.
