Certainly they have picked up some players here and there, but in the last 4 years most of the offensive players have come up through their program. It's not as though they are getting an entire team of ringers every year.

I think the reason why they've done so well is the coaching. They've gone to the state championship with 4 different quarterbacks. They've also won some really tough games. The first state championship was won on a two point conversion. This last game against Joliet Catholic was won in part because of the decision to not kick a field goal late in the game on 4th down.

Your QB transfered in last year from Marian Catholic and your stud lineman came from St. Joes.

Yeah, I knew about the quarterback, but he actually only played one season at Montini and he broke his leg early in the season. Each of the last four seasons the team has had a different quarterback. Of last year's team the star wide receiver who is now on the Nebraska football team was actually better than the quarterback and that receiver was not a transfer. I don't pay enough attention to know which lineman that is. I guess my point being that it's not as though the whole team is transfers. The advantage of a private school is that you can recruit players from other locations. Whereas a public school is limited to the players in the district. But there are always high school players who transfer or move to transfer teams (i.e. Kevin Garnett) to get more notice.

This "recruiting" statement bothers me. A lot of kids want to go to a good school and sports program. I know I did with Marian. If the Catholic Church your family is registered at within said diocese, you can go to the school. I chose to commute 32 miles a day to go there...and yes, the coaches saw me play baseball and football in 8th grade, but I wanted to go...the coaches also watched my sister for basketball and volleyball in 8th grade. She wanted to go to grant, but my dad told she was going to Marian.

Also, if you transferred in from another school without moving from another diocese, you had could practice with the team but you were not allowed to play in any games for a calendar school year.

They recruit. There really is no debate about that, right?

Sounds good to me. Not a huge HS football fan, but that seems logical.

If the coaches watched you and your sister play ball and tried to convince you and your family to have you play at their school, what else would it be called other than "recruiting"?

Coaches never spoke to me, my sister, or my parents. They were just at a couple of games.

No different than the local h.s. coach at youth football games.

Except you live in the local coaches district. You are "designated to go there" whether he attends or not. What incentive can he offer outside of.......nothing? The private school coach can "sell" his school/program in a variety of ways.

JCA and Providence are good almost every single year. Yet the Joliet public HS absolutely suck, and they are all withing about 8 miles of each other.

Because once a program is established, the best athletes continue to want to go to those schools. I would also guess that the education at Joliet H.S. is not the same as that of JC and Providence.

Sure it is different. A local h.s. coach at a youth football game is watching kids that are in his school district.

Even if nothing was verbally said, why do you think the coaches were in attendance? They were not just wanting to watch a competitive game. They were hopeful of getting kids into their school.

Parents still have the choice to pay for it...anywhere from 10-20x more than public schools.

Oh yeah. Those aren't even secret/illegal. There are "grants" for all kinds of kids.

We had a student tuition fund that we're we had to sell $50 worth of raffle tickets all four years. Kids worked at the cafeteria, etc...

We're not talking SEC football here. Plus, there's the multiplier. Marian had 37 kids on their varsity and were in 5A with a 2A/3A enrollment.

I am not saying everyone is in those situations. I have no doubt there are many who are doing things the right way and whose parents work hard to put them through school.

But surely you know that there are other situations where it is not so nice and neat.

I personally know of 2 situations, one in NW Indiana and one down here in Missouri. In Indiana a kid I grew up with in a public school setting was probably the best athlete to come through our area in many years. Word of how good he was started to get around and suddenly in 8th grade he transfers to a Catholic school. He lived with his father, mother was out of the picture, and his father was a real poor dude, probably had less than any of the other families around us. Guy had no resources whatsoever to put his son through that school, yet the kid went there.

Situation 2 here in Missouri. 2 brothers in our area who are really really good football players start having a catholic league supporters start showing up at their middle school games. They want these brothers to play for their school and the parents were told they could get significant tuition discounts and even help with finding housing and work if they wanted to move closer to the school.

I can't speak to Marian, but when I was at Gordon, it was a football and basketball factory. They recruited like crazy. The eighth grade tournament was the centerpiece of the basketball recruiting. The quarterback from my class was a guy named Carlos Fando. The coaches actually told the better players on that team to keep Fando's head in the game until Dietz got there. Dave Dietz was two years younger than we were but he got there and as a sophomore quarterbacked them to the state championship. I don't know what happened to Fando.

Also, public schools recruit all the time. That shit is rampant in the Chicago Public League. The '80-'81 Evanston basketball team should have been the best in the state, but Cory Blackwell got recruited over to Crane and they invented some phony grandma's address for him. Bobby Thomas got recruited over to Loyola and the White brothers actually lived in Evanston, but their dad coached at Crane and that's where they played. Beaver White was a bad motherfucker. He played at NIU. He's several years younger than I am. Maybe spanky remembers him. I think his real first name is Deron.

1980- first ever 6A champions. Beat Reavis 6-0 on a Marty Calkins touchdown.

Maybe you go all the way back to Tony Lawless or some shit, but in my time I don't think we lost to Fenwick in any sport. Maybe chess.

I know a Family who moved from Ohio to the Western Chicago suburbs a few years ago so their Son could Wrestle at Marmion. Their Son won State the year that Marmion won something like 5 state Wrestling championships in different weight classes.
Private schools actively recruit.

I'm not that old Joe. And everyone lost to Fenwick in swimming and water polo.

When did Versace coach hoops at Gordon?

Gordon didn't have a pool- no swimming or water polo.

Gordon football and hoops have fallen on hard times.

Versace was there in the early 70s. Then he moved to Jackson Community College in Michigan and on to Bradley. He took Carl Maniscalco with him to every stop.

A lot of sharp basketball guys think the '72 team was the only team in the state that may have had a shot at giving Thornridge a game. LeArthur Scott lived with Versace who had become his guardian. They had a bunch of other bomber guys too. A slick point guard named Steve King, a big guy named Marshall Hill. That's Aggravated Bob's time. He has some good stories about when they played at Loyola.

Didn't Don Beebe somehow get Steve Tasker's kid to come all the way from New York to currently play at Aurora Christian.
