Ditka was great last night on the pre-game. Said the Bears were going to won for George Halas, Sid Luckman and Dick Butkus. All he needed was Mike North at his side.

Well, I am neither too young or poorly read to know what I'm talking about. Not having, nor caring to read Vainisi's accounting, Boyd is correct. To quote Vainisi as authority is laughable. His story is/was biased to allow him a better accounting in Chicago, and I seem to recall that Ditka didn't exactly stand by Vainisi when the long knives were clearly out for his "buddy". Further, Vainisi made a number of questionable remarks inflating his role in the development of that team, roundly criticised from all corners.

There wasn't any question about the power struggle, smart fans saw it as ridiculous and knew that it was largely over within 12-18 mos. after the Super Bowl. And knew Ditka had a big role in that disaster.

Yes, McCaskey did suddenly fashion himself as a 1980's football savant, but so did Ditka....to the detriment of Vainisi, just like Jim Finks before him.

In this day and age with all the social media, Ditka wouldn't have lasted past '87, and the Bears might have been able to win another SB with a different coach.

The best thing to happen for Ditka was that he won a Super Bowl. The worst thing to happen for the Bears longterm plans was that Ditka won a Super Bowl.
