http://www.hammerandrails.com/2012/11/2 ... ave-doeren

1. Dave Doeren, Northern Illinois - I honestly think we can have a ton of success next year with a guy that has the Huskies in the top 25 and they are a point away from being undefeated. Jordan Lynch is a first-year starter at QB that has 2,750 yards passing with 23 TDs and four picks. He has also rushed for 1,611 yards and 16 more TDs. Can you imagine what Rob Henry would do in a similarly styled offense? Purdue would have a pseudo-revenge game set up when it hosts NIU next season.

2. Sonny Dykes, Louisiana Tech - I've cooled on him in recent weeks, but his Louisiana Tech offense has scored a ton of points and was on the verge of a BCS bid for awhile. Unfortunately, with at least four openings in SEC country they may go after him much harder than Purdue.

3. Butch Jones, Cincinnati - This has some added drama with Purdue opening at Cincinnati next season. In three years since taking over for Brian Kelly at Cincy Jones has had some solid teams. He also coached Dan LeFevour, who put the fear of God in us three times.

4. Mark Helfrich, Oregon - Helfrich is the Oregon offensive coordinator, but how much of that blur offense for the Ducks the result of Chip Kelly? We may found out.

5. Trent Miles, Indiana State - Yes, it is another FCS hire, but you have to understand how bad the Trees were before Miles got there. They were generally considered to be the worst FCS team in the country, which is way down there. He had them on the verge of this year's playoffs and they upset No. 1 North Dakota State on the road. The fact he even made that program competitive after they were getting blown out by Division II schools is impressive.

IMO if you can get Helfrich you do it. You get a guy that has been around a top tier program that knows what it takes in todays climate to get things done.

As an IU fan I hope and pray it is Miles

Butch Jones is going to get some way better offers than Purdue so I don't think he will be the guy. Doeren should just sit tight for another year until the Wisconsin job opens up.

Dave Doeren or Brock Spack from Ilst.

What offers are those?

It's not like LSU or Ohio State are available. I'd say Auburn is better, but I'm not sure it is given what Saban is going to do to them year after year. Tennessee is better. Kentucky isn't.

Basically, the only "way better offers" are to get your teeth kicked in by better SEC programs and get fired in 3 years.

I think it will be Doeren. I think it's been pretty much set for about 3 weeks already. Saturday should be interesting, because clearly you have to wait until they play the MAC championship game.

Something concerns me about Mark Helfrich. He probably is a good coach, but I think he would struggle to recruit given he's a west coast guy.

Butch Jones is probably the #1 choice, but they'll have to pay $2+ million to get him.

Oh, and Brock Spack has a 0% chance. Maybe in 10 years he has a chance, but right now he has absolutely no shot.

Brick, what makes you think it has been set? It there some connection with him and Purdue?

If true, Spanky is NOT going to be happy about this.

I say all of this not as an insider. I am not trying to Bucky Chris the thread here.

This all started a few weeks ago. The story really broke after the Minnesota game, but supposedly things started to move forward after the Wisconsin blowout. A search firm was unofficially gauging interest. Obviously, Doeren, with his Big Ten ties was interested. Also, for whatever reason, Purdue really appreciates the Wisconsin program and seems to want to emulate them. That's why they almost hired Paul Chryst, but instead the hired Hope for continuity. He showed interest. There were even some initial discussions on money. However, the decision was not official on Hope. After the Minnesota blowout, it was over. They gauged Doeren's interest, and offered somewhere from $1.5 million to $1.8 million. It is reported that it was a done deal. The rest is procedural, with not messing up NIU's season(though, Doeren won't be coaching them in the bowl game) and letting Hope finish the season. There were many people who said it was over.

However, the Butch Jones rumors started after all of this. It's very possible that Butch Jones actually expressed interest through the same back channels that Purdue was using to get Doeren. Obviously, he needs to be considered. This is supposedly what happened with Painter, as even Missouri didn't really believe he was an option until Painter started the process. That's why I think that Butch Jones is looking for a raise from Cincy, and is using Purdue as leverage. However, I would think that he would get the nod over Doeren, depending on what "done deal" really means.

He'll get his chance next year to exact revenge.

I would say Boston College, NC State, USC if it becomes open, Arkansas and the other SEC jobs other than Kentucky.

Of course.

Arkansas yes, Kentucky No, Auburn probably.

The thing is though that Butch Jones probably won't get an offer to any of those programs.

Yes. It's a clear upgrade.

There are a few names I would be happy with. Hazell, Doeren, Jones are among them.

In reality, as long as Purdue is willing to pay what it needs and makes a bigger commitment to football I'll be happy.

Isn't it possible that the Iowa job opens up as well?

I doubt it. That's a huge buyout.

I'd hope Doeren wouldn't make the same mistake as Kill and leave a good team for a conference doormat. It would take a lot of $$ I suppose, and Purdue doesn't have a history of throwing $$$ around.

Purdue is not a better job than BC. I'm not sure it's a better job than any of the others listed in this thread.

DD is a defensive coach, and didn't Purdue just come out and say they desperately want an offensive minded coach?

Just what we need a Wisconsin jackass at Purdue.

 Purdue isn't a conference doormat. This isn't the early 90s.

I would not talk down Purdue much if I were you. It could be used against you in your next "NIU is a better program than Illinois" debate.

Purdue needs a coach with Big Ten roots, that has enough money in the bank so they're willing to take less. Purdue is a stepping-stone job for somebody to get back on their feet and into a spotlight position...........
