IIRC, he was the coach of the 77 Bears playoff team, who got in the playoffs on a game winning Bob Thomas field goal in the last game of the year. Still remember being in the car with Dad listening to the game.

Too bad. I also recall that field goal.

That that was the game Payton needed 200 plus yards to break OJ's single season record but the fucking weather was horrible and he didnt come close. NFL today closed their pregame that day with the Payton montage to " Nobody Does it Better". I dont know if its cool to like Payton around these parts given what we now know about him but he was and still is my favorite football player of all time.

It is fine with me. Actually now that I think about it and my age at that time that season started my bear football love affair.

Yeah, it was snowy, wasn't it? I remember watching that game with my friend, Scrawny who was a much bigger Bears fan than I was and he was so excited. They had been pretty lousy for as long we could remember. I also remember thinking that Buffone was really fucking old during that game. He couldn't have been more than about 35.

I remember that and after that I remember the PO game against Dallas. The Bears got crushed and when they finally made a 1st down in that game on a pass to James Scott (Great WR from the Chicago Fire),he spiked the ball out of frustration. The friggin refs penalized the Bears (for delay of game on the spike) and I became very angry.

In 1979 Playoffs against Philly,Payton was about to move in for a score that might have turned the game towards the Bears. A fumble occurred. TV Replay showed he didn't fumble but that was before NFL replay of course.

The NFL Today "Nobody Does It Better" video was awesome.

Nothing like a little Jack Pardee Show followed by NFL Today.

I always remember him as the Houston coach when they hung 95 on SMU.
