What is the fascination of butts around here today?

KS is having way too much of an impact here.

Idiot.
And then the rest of the panel kept repeating "At least this will all be solved with the 4-team playoff in a couple years". Um......It would be the same deal. NIU would still get one of the "Big" bowl games for being "best of the rest".

Love the sarcasm and bitterness, Dr. Ken.
ESPN said FSU opened at (-7), which has to be a mistake. Has to be at least 10+. Maybe more.

No bitterness. A little sarcasm.

I'm happy for you guys. This is finally the chance that I thought you guys always wanted. BCS Bowl games are cool.

I truly hope NIU sticks it to everyone. Myself included. I could use a good sticking.

I don't think it's going to happen though.

Both teams are gonna be a little "unsteady" with their coaching situation. And like somebody on ESPN said - yeah, this is FSU's first BCS game since 2004-05, how excited are they that they are staying in-state and playing NIU? Probably not thrilled.

The crowd being 90%-10% in favor of FSU isn't going to help.
Will this game be a sell-out?

Speaking of conference homers, Vandy's coach has ND 4th, after 3 SEC schools (UF, Ala, UGA). He had LSU 5th.

Congrats boys!!! You worked hard, won 12 in a row...the system is what it is, so if NIU got the bowl bid, they deserved it....any SEC and Big-12 whiners, too bad shouldn't have lost that second game Oklahoma/Georgia....I was at the MAC Championship Friday night to see the goods (Jordan Lynch) and can't wait to head down to Miami....not sure NIU can do much against Florida State, but who gives a damn...the money is HUGE for NIU and the MAC in general, not to mention the publicity the school is getting!!!

Not only did Stoops have NIU at 24, he put his own team at 6. Coaches really should have no say in this.

I think we should all go into work tomorrow and give our bosses our "promotion" poll. Feel free to rank yourself #1.

As an NIU fan & the Father of a Son who will graduate from NIU in 2 weeks, I couldn't be happier for the school, players, fans & the MAC conference. However, if I'm being objective, I gotta say that the BCS system is a joke. The 2 team per conference rule is a joke. I don't think NIU is better than the 5 teams ranked below them in the last poll. Having said that, the rules are the rules & NIU is in the Orange Bowl, as unbelievable as it is. I agree with Herbie, Palmer & Pollack, but they went way overboard in their bashing of NIU.
I never ever thought I would see the day when NIU would play in a major bowl game. My Son played ball with a few of the kids on the team. I have a couple of neighbors who have kids on the team. I would like nothing more than to see NIU beat Florida State. Up until today, my Son wanted a trip to Las Vegas as his graduation present. Now he wants to go to the Orange Bowl...& that is what he will get.

Who really cares about the BCS bowls though? There's the BCS Championship game and everything else. Oklahoma is still in a bowl. NIU would have been in a bowl that wasn't the Orange, oh well.

Realistically, 24 may be about right for NIU though. Putting his own team #6 is what's bullshit.

But what do they really mean?

It's an exhibition game that ultimately means nothing. If I was going pro, I wouldn't even want to suit up for it and risk injury and ruin a future pro career. Coaches walk away from their teams to take new jobs, so I don't think they care about bowls either. If they were so important, why would a coach quit on his team before going to the bowl?

They care more about going from $400k a year to $1.7 million a year. I don't think it means that no one cares about them.

But that's the same thinking that bernstein espouses when he talks about championships being the only thing that matters and that this Bulls season is "meaningless". You go to a bunch of Bulls games, right? They can't be that meaningless. A bowl game and all the pageantry that goes with it is a big deal. Especially the Rose Bowl. I agree that the BCS and the current structure has taken something away from the bowl games. As a very casual fan, I'm not even sure when they're played. But the days when the Orange, Cotton, Sugar, and Rose Bowls were all played on New Year's Day were great. To me the overriding desire to crown a definitive champion (which will never really be achieved, as there will always be some school from the MAC or another lesser conference with one loss that believes it deserved a chance) has taken something away from college football.

I'd say you don't have the right mentality to be successful at sports then.

If you were a HS senior and had a scholarship waiting for you, would you "suit up" if it wasn't a playoff game?
If you were a pro that was on the verge of a big free-agent contract, would you "suit up" if it wasn't a playoff game?
It's no different for the college players. This is their reward for the hard work and a successful season.

Many people including myself might find a sizeable chunk of the NBA regular season boring, but I wouldn't consider it meaningless. Let's say the Bulls lose their division by 1 game this season, that game last week where they blew a 27 point lead to Milwaukee would look very important now. But for Bowl games (besides the National title game), what are school's playing for? What happens if they win? What happens if they lose? I don't think there's a difference if either outcome happens for NIU. That's why I consider them meaningless exhibition games. When your coach won't even stick around for it, it shows me how important they are.

The game itself is the goal. Don't you think that's enough?

That whole "unless you're the absolute best, you're a loser" thing is ridiculous. bernstein doesn't have the smartest kid or the best job or the hottest wife. Why doesn't he just kill himself?

I don't have any problem with people taking bowl games seriously, I just consider them to be as important as an All-Star game, or the NHL Winter Classic.

A bowl game is simply like an unscheduled regular season game.

What is the difference between a Purdue-Oklahoma State game in September vs. a Purdue-Oklahoma State game in January? The only difference I see is that one game is an attempt to get to a bowl, while the other is an attempt to win a bowl game.
