I know one person that thinks the NC State job is a better one.

Purdue is all in on Butch Jones, offering him more money than Doeren is getting.

Jones met with Purdue officials last Sunday. People close to Doeren said he was no longer a candidate on Monday.

Now, things can change, but right now I fully expect a Monday news conference announcing Jones as the next coach, with the rumor likely coming out tomorrow.

Thought I heard that Jones is going to Colorado today to interview.

He was at Purdue yesterday, and is off to Colorado today.

Hopefully he just likes free steak dinners.

Boy, they are setting themselves up for a huge debacle if they don't land Jones.

Pretty much, but practically it's not much different than if they hadn't gone after a "BCS coach".

I just don't see Colorado winning out. I was more worried about Kentucky, but he shot them down right away. The problem with Colorado is that it's a terrible place to recruit at, especially when you have no real ties outside the Midwest.

They will offer a bunch more money. At least $500k more per year than Purdue.

Is that right? McCartney seemed to do pretty well there, but I do realize that college football is a rapidly changing space and that's ancient history.

I'm sure there are those here who think Kentucky is a better job than Purdue, but that football program is truly a stepchild. If they ever managed to play for the national championship it would probably draw less interest in Lexington than the Midnight Madness practice.

This does not sound good for Purdue:

Quote:
Butch Jones might have a difficult time saying no to Colorado officials when he and his wife, Barbara, meet with them today in Boulder, Bill Koch writes at cincinnati.com.

According to The Denver Post’s Woodie Page, Colorado is prepared to offer Jones a five-year contract worth $13.5 million, with upgrades to 53,613-seat Folsom Field, the Dal Ward Athletic Center and the team practice facilities.

If the money doesn’t turn Jones’ head, the facilities upgrades likely will. Under terms of the contract he signed with UC at the end of last season, Jones is scheduled to make $1.6 million in 2013, gradually increasing to a high of $2.05 million in 2017, the last year of the contract.

Weird. I thought facilities didn't matter to prospective coaches?

I don't think it matters as much as the 2.7 million per year

Agree.

Take the specific profession out of it, $$$ talks.

Hopefully a good counter offer is coming.

The facilities upgrade thing won't matter. Purdue is offering the exact same thing.

It's going to come down to money. I bet Purdue matches that offer.

How high can Purdue go on this thing? They are already making a big jump in salary.

They have $4.5 million to spend on the head coach and assistants. I would guess he's authorized to take that up to $5 million.

They'd be stupid to lose him over a few hundred thousand dollars given that a winning coach will be worth millions.

Thought Purdue already upgraded the facilities?

They better hurry and get a deal done before Mitch Daniels gets there. Can't picture him spending big bucks on a mere football coach.

They did. The basketball upgrades helped football just as much as it did basketball. The next step is to finish the in stadium upgrades which should have happened about 15 years ago.

Cincinatti media reporting that Purdue has made an offer better than Colorado.

Starting to get concerned that this is all an attempt by Jones to get more money from Cincy.

I know you are just doing your standard spanky thing, but I thought Purdue was about equal to Colorado before, so it doesn't really change things now.

If Jones doesn't come to Purdue, is the next choice the coach from Kent State Darrell Hazell

Isn't Colorado one of the.....say 3 worst jobs in the PAC?

I don't know if they've been in there long enough to have a firm grasp but they are pretty terrible right now.

I'd still say that Oregon State, Arizona State and/or Arizona, and Washington State are worse or equal. Utah has the same problem with how new they are in the conference.

Word is that the AD did a pretty bad job in the interview with Jones. That's disappointing if true.

2nd choice is known. Darrell Hazell of Kent State. There was a 3 hour long meeting today.

I'd like to officially change my #1 choice from Doeren, to Jones, to now Hazell.

Is this coaching search really going as poorly as this thread seems to indicate?

As seen with Illinois last year, merely being in the Big Ten does not constitute a better job to many coaches. Especially with many mid level universities willing to spend more money to pay their football coaches.

Football coaches have massive egos. Many would rather be big fish in a small pond, instead of a big fish in an ocean.
