Handguns are never a problem. I am tired of hearing you people blame them for murders. These people would have died even if handguns did not exist. #Truth

But America is well on its way to becoming a plutocratic state. May as well disarm the proletariat now.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Really? Why do you think the founding father SPECIFICALLY included a right to bear arms in the Bill of Rights. The right to bear arms is designed to protect the people from an overreaching government. It goes hand in hand with all our other freedoms which are slowly being curtailed each day.

I have my handguns to protect me from my government. Without my handguns, I would not be alive. You can blame mental illness and anything else, but do not blame guns for any acts of violence. It is not the American way and my militia or the Founding Fathers would not approve. #Truth

While I agree with Whitlock that there is too much senseless gun violence, I cannot walk over and blame the handgun for this situation. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. I'm all for stricter gun laws -- moreso with the banning of assualt weapons. The weapon in this case was -- I believe -- a handgun.
The issue here is whether or not Belcher had a history of pyschological problems? Did head force trauma -- caused by the rigors of football -- lead to this episode?
At this point, diagnosing triggers for adverse mental states needs to be where the focus should lie in this case.

Truly another disturbing fact -- the rising sales of guns during Obama's presidency and the reluctness by the administration to sign into law legislation that was a 2008 campaign promise.

Why is it that the price on booze n smokes rises and gets the annual sin tax but guns n ammo avoid it?

I'm pretty sure that if someone is willing to commit the illegal act of murder they are also willing to commit the illegal act of gun ownership.

The world would be a great place if guns were eradicated, and maybe one day we'll have the technology to do so, but until then, bad people will still get guns to do bad things.

I agree. A gun may have just made it easier to happen. If he wanted to do this, he would have done it with a knife, a baseball bat, by strangling, fire, etc.

You think he could have beaten himself to death with a baseball bat in front of three other grown men? Or choked himself to death?

He could have strangled/hung himself. He could have set fire to the house him and his GF were in. He could have beaten her to death with a baseball bat, then stabbed himself.

A gun just made it a lot easier. Spany, I hope you do realize murders happened even before guns were around.

Franklin, I hope you realize that you keep repeating that "guns make it easier".

I think that's kinda the point of one side of the discussion.

No. The point is that this likely would have happened (and could have happened) regardless if guns were around or not.

Taking guns away would not have saved his life or hers. His mind was made up and he did what he did. He would have killed her and himself with or without a gun.

You said multiple times that having a gun available made it easier for him to do what he did.

I agree with you.

As a guy that generally supports gun ownership hearing the same tired defenses of guns really annoys the hell out of me. Guns are never the problem whenever people are murdered. The solution you hear is "this wouldn't have happened if more people had guns". To fix gun violence we should give more people guns? That's just crazy. How will you owning a handgun protect you from your government? Fact is many of these these wouldn't happen if handguns/guns weren't so easily available. I guess we should stop blaming illegal drugs for some of our problems too. Maybe we need more illegal drugs to fix our illegal drug problem.

We need more murder to prevent future murders.

I think we should outlaw alcohol. oops that didn't work so well.
I think we should outlaw drugs. oops that doesn't work so well.
I think we should outlaw guns. That will assuredly work well.

I don't recall ever taking a stance one way or another. I was against the mandatory prison sentences that targeted minorities and the poor.

Most people probably didn't want alcohol to be outlawed and understood that outlawing it wouldn't stop people from becoming alcoholics and that it would create another market for organized crime if it were. Those same people most likely were not in denial that alcohol made it easier for someone to become an alcoholic.

Most people probably understood that fighting a war on drugs was going to be nearly impossible. They new that gangs and organized crime was going to make that a tough war to win. They also knew that illegal drugs made it easier for anyone to become drug addicts.

Same thing applies to guns. Most people understand that it's impossible to get rid of all guns and wouldn't advocate getting rid of all of them. Most reasonable people believe buying a gun should be a lot harder than buy a pack of cigarettes and that guns make it easier for people to commit acts of violence. We all know most people will choose the easiest route. IMO the NRA is worse than any union in this country but they're bulletproof.
