That line says it all right there.

He may never recover professionally from that move. i hope he does though.

But NC State certainly isn't a better job than any school in the Big Ten.

Please tell me you don't believe this.

A hot young coach with Big Ten/midwest roots just chose it over 2 other Big Ten jobs.
He didn't choose it over Purdue. Purdue is going all in on Butch Jones offering him $2 million plus.

In fact, when it came out on Monday that Doeren was no longer a candidate, it was because Butch Jones is the guy.

Now, things can fall apart, but Jones was always #1.

And I don't believe he chose it over Illinois either. I don't think the Illinois job is really available. Thomas is going to look like even more of a jackass if he dumps Beckman now. My guess is he floated a story that if they could get the right guy in a perfect world they'd eat Beckman's buyout. The Doeren rumors were natural.

Only in spanky's world are NC State and NIU superior to Purdue and Iowa.

Good luck trying to beat Notre Dame with a program that hasn't won a bad conference in 32 years against the Dukes and Marylands and North Carolinas of the world.

I said it was reported it was a "done deal" but then something changed. That's perfectly logical given that nothing is official until the ink is dry.

If Doeren had gotten interest from Alabama he would have ended the unofficial agreement too. Butch Jones showed interest that was unexpected and things changed.

Now, they have to beat Colorado out for him.

I never really liked Doeren anyway. I thought he was standing on the shoulders of others. I agree that this move has the feel of a guy who is going to make his money and fade into coaching obscurity.

I am suprised NIU hired from within. I would imagine they would have been a very attractive job for a hot young name in coaching.

What makes every single coaching job in the big ten better than NC State (or similar school) for a potential candidate?

Here I'll help you start your list:

Facilities

No. The Big Ten is a far more important football conference than the ACC. I don't give a fuck if they built the Taj Mahal of weight rooms down in Raleigh, it's not going to magically transform it into a better place to coach football than Purdue or Minnesota. It isn't that hard to understand.
Big Ten > ACC > MAC
Got it now?

So Minnesota and Purdue are better jobs than Florida St and Miami?

Florida State no. Miami yes.

No, I wouldn't say that. Those are true football schools that really aren't a great fit for the traditional ACC. This shit is changing rapidly anyway. The ACC is trying to save itself by bringing in Notre Dame as a quasi-member. I would guess that any thought the priests had about becoming a full member went out the window with the big paydays that are coming from this season.

Anyway, I meant exactly what I said and nothing else. Every Big Ten job is better than the NC State job. Not better than every job in every other conference. Not better than the top job in the ACC.

I don't think it's that far fetched for Miami. There is a reason that all the relevance of that program has come with massive amounts of cheating.

I think Florida as a state is more appealing than Indiana or Minnesota. So consider that when saying "better." if we had a choice, alma matter not considered, i think more than half of us would move to florida for a few years than stay in the midwest (if were all coaching candidates at a mid-major type football conference) at least for the lower tier big ten schools.

For Florida and Florida State of course. There are a lot of reasons why Miami is an average at best job.

That's why Boston College may steal their coach.

Yeah, but Miami is easily the nicest place to live in Florida.

Well Hawaii is the nicest place in the country to live, but any Big Ten job is better too.

So it couldn't be that Doeren was not interested in the Purdue job? It must be because Purdue wanted Butch Jones more...lol

I get a kick out of you guys on your high horses.
