I don't watch a lot of college football, but does Herbstreit react like this all time or was this way over the top even for him?

Was he ever this upset about that little scandal that happened at Penn State? If not, he's a goddam moron.

He's typically the level-headed one out of Corso, Holtz, and May. This was not his usual type of reaction.

You would think he would learn not to be upset over college football. After all, he got the fanbase of his alma mater so upset with him he had to move to Tennessee.

How does Herbstreit's rant make NIU better at football?

Former NIU/NFL player's response to Herbstreit losing his shit on national TV last night:

Dear Mr. Kirk Herbstreit: I want to thank you for giving my former team extra fuel to propel them through the next month into the New Year. I’m glad you gave your opinion on the situation on live television. Most people won’t get a chance to make a rebuttal on that size stage, but I thought that maybe I could reach you this way. I can understand that some teams feel like they got squeezed out of a BCS game, but the facts are that those are the rules. Northern Illinois didn’t do anything wrong, in fact, they did everything right – on and off the field. I find it extremely unfair and unprofessional that you have a knee jerk reaction and trash a team that has been waiting for their moment for over a decade. Your opinion that “no one even knew they were playing” is a “sad state” of reporting. This team has been one of the most dominant in the MAC over the past several years – I can assure you that everyone in the area has been paying attention. Sure, we don’t get the national spotlight often, but for you to call the situation a “joke” when we finally do is disgusting, in my opinion. The NIU students, athletes, coaches, administrators and fans are extremely proud of the team and the program they have built over the past decade. Win or lose, the Huskies are going to bring their best and show the nation what we are about. If it were up to me, I would show the clip of your rant about 5 minutes before kick off. Finally, just to bring you up to speed, in 2014, NIU would've gotten a BCS 2.0 invitation as well, because it's the highest-ranked of the Group of Five conference champ.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Ryan Diem
NIU ’97-‘00
Indianapolis Colts ’01-‘11

Glad NIU is playing in the Orange Bowl.

I got $50 that says they don't cover the spread.

It reminds me of the Packer/other ESPN college BB guy rant from a few years ago after the tournament announcement. They were proven wrong.

FSU is nothing spectuacular. They had to pull one out of their ass to beat 6-7 GT to get into the BCS. 16 points is a big spread and the recent history of teams covering big spreads (double digits) in bowl games is not very good.

I'm sure I'll be drunk by the time the game starts so I'll throw down bigger than I should on NIU. If this gets over 17, pound it.

A little annoyed I haven't heard any serious discussion of NIU landing this BCS bid all day on the score...It's pretty impressive given no one ever thought this would happen, not asking for an hour...maybe a good 5 mins or so....oh well, just glad NIU got the publicity (even the rippings) and the $18M payout for the MAC and other Non AQ schools...suck balls nation, wipe your tears georgia/oklahoma, NIU got your spot and there is nothin you can do about it...so sorry

If OU gets that bid they are 7 point favorites in my opinion with just as good of a chance to blow out FSU as FSU has of blowing out NIU

Lest I be accused of being a poor sport, good for NIU. I think it's good for sport that we get one of these types of teams every year.

NIU fans(well, MAC fans in general) make it hard to root for them with how obnoxious they can be, but it's pretty cool they did it against some pretty big odds.

herbstreit makes some good points, and unlike people like screamin' a, he seemed genuine in his thoughts. he wasn't just "getting mad for the camera".

i think most of college football is loaded and i mainly watch because the fanbases are so entertaining. it's deeply flawed...but you do get some fun games out of it.

Well, you do seem on an endless journey to definitively prove that Illinois and Purdue are terrible programs.

Right. And you seem to do the opposite.

Thus.......the basic foundation of an "argument". Crazy how that works.

I understand it in a "NIU vs. Big Ten" debate but when I post that Purdue lost out on it's first choice you immediately jump in with something that basically says "Your program sucks worse than Colorado and Colorado is a terrible Pac 12 team" post.

Anyways, it just makes it hard to root for NIU, even with all the reasons to do so. Luckily, there is more to life than this board and I get over it.

Their top two choices went to NC State (which you bashed to no end) and now Colorado.
I'll just let the facts do the talking at this point.

Good luck landing the 2nd choice coaching prospect from the conference that you absolutely ridicule to no end. I hope he turns Purdue around.

Not really helping your case here about the whole "hard to feel happy for them" thing.

It was NIU, their team, and their fans that caused the first two guys to choose elsewhere.

Maybe we'd have more luck if we let the next coach sit out the game between our schools next year.

In doing my research on NIU for the championship I was suprised to see the weakness of the NIU schedule. They played four teams out of 13 with winning records (one of them being a D. II school). One other team was .500.

However, fuck that. This is payback. They had what I consider a much stronger team several years ago that got completely shut out of a bowl. I believe that beat Alabama and Maryland that year. Those results had a two pronged detriment for NIU. First, the bigger schools no longer wanted to schedule them for pre conference games. Secondly NIU was incentivized to schedule games it could win.

Ultimately I don't care. Did I really need to see Oklahoma play again on NYD?

Wasn't Alabama like 2-10 that year? It wasn't like they exactly stuffed it down Nick Saban's throat.

Alabama was 4-9, but Maryland ended up ranked higher than NIU at the end of that season.

Don't really care either way that NIU got into the BCS, but the criticism of NIU seems a little hollow when the Big East champion is also BCS bound.

Just as a comparison

Toledo (MAC) beat Cincinnati (tied for 1st in the Big East)
Kent State (MAC) beat Rutgers (tied for 1st in the Big East)

I just don't get how upset people are over this. It's like being in high school and throwing a shitfit because someone sat at your lunch table.
