No. They missed out on the #1 choice, and the #2 choice was interviewed yesterday while Jones was interviewing in Colorado. Today, we find out if anyone else is on the radar or Hazell is the only target. The coach at Fresno State has been mentioned a lot too.

I thought they missed out on #1 and #2, #1 being Doren, #2 being Jones.

Jones has interviewed at Purdue and Colorado in the past few days. Jones is expected to make a decision regarding whether to stay at Cincinnati or take the Colorado job by Tuesday afternoon. Sources said Purdue is no longer in the running.

From what I read this morning it sounds like he wants to stay in Cincy just trying to get as much $$ as he can from them.

Doeren was not #1. Jones was by a wide margin.

Doeren didn't want to wait for the Jones stuff to play out so he went to NC State. If he hadn't, Doeren would probably be getting an offer better than what NC State gave him. Obviously, Purdue regrets the decision to go all in on Jones, because it seems like this was all just a way for Jones to get more money from Cincy as I originally suspected.

He "pulled a Painter" if true. I guess I can't be mad at that.

I don't really get it. I mean I understand wanting to have some consistency staying at the same place. But why would you turn down a Pac 10 or a Big 10 job to stay at Cincy?

Rumors are that his wife has a lot of pull in the decision.

Maybe Cincy is about to join a bigger conference.

He can make the same money and be first place in the Big East (which is still a BCS conference) or be in the middle to last place in a "better" conference.

Nobody wants to go to a "tougher" place to win if they aren't going to be making a shit ton of money doing it.

I guess I had it backwards. Jones was 1, and Doeren was 2. Still missed out on both guys. Still seems to indicate an Illinois-level of job interest from potential coaches.

They had to choose one or the other. They chose Jones. If Jones had accepted, would they have "missed out" on Doeren? That wouldn't make sense.

It's all linear. You have a first choice, when that choice goes away, you have a second choice, when that choice goes away, you have a third choice. You can't lose your second choice before you lose your first choice.

The timing was that a week from last Sunday, Purdue met with Jones. On Monday, Doeren, through his people, said he was no longer a candidate. On Sunday, Jones met with with Purdue again, and it obviously didn't go well. Now, Purdue needs to make another choice. The second one they had to make.

It looks like Hazell from Kent State and if not him, who knows after that.

If it's not Hazell that becomes a real possibility.

That's fine but expectations for a coach you wanted have clearly been lowered since you declared the Doeren deal done and said Butch Jones is the #1 guy.

I didn't say it was done, I said it was reported that it was done, but that something changed, which happened to be big interest by Jones. I did that all in the same post. Don't twist it around now.

Obviously though, they missed out on choice #1 so expectations have been lowered. Hopefully this ends up like the last time they missed out on choice #1, as Bob Davie headed to Notre Dame right before he was about to come to Purdue and they had to settle for Joe Tiller.

Im not twisting your words at all. This is the post Im referring to. Im assuming you have a good pulse on Purdue athletics, and this post clearly indicates that you believed it would be Doeren if they didn't pony up the money for Jones. So since they missed out on both, it led me to asking the question about how highly Purdue is actually regarded among potential coaches.
Boilermaker Rick wrote:
I think it will be Doeren. I think it's been pretty much set for about 3 weeks already. Saturday should be interesting, because clearly you have to wait until they play the MAC championship game.

Something concerns me about Mark Helfrich. He probably is a good coach, but I think he would struggle to recruit given he's a west coast guy.

Butch Jones is probably the #1 choice, but they'll have to pay $2+ million to get him.

Oh, and Brock Spack has a 0% chance. Maybe in 10 years he has a chance, but right now he has absolutely no shot.

I thought it would be Doeren. I was wrong. They had to give up on him to go after Jones. That's why I don't think it reflects the regard that potential coaches have for it. Butch Jones turning them down does. Doeren deciding not to wait on an offer doesn't.

Once again, I never said it was a done deal with Doeren. I was describing the exact scenario above, which ended with them going in on Jones and making Doeren no longer a candidate unless he was willing to wait over a week.

Brick, what makes you think it has been set? It there some connection with him and Purdue?
I say all of this not as an insider. I am not trying to Bucky Chris the thread here.

This all started a few weeks ago. The story really broke after the Minnesota game, but supposedly things started to move forward after the Wisconsin blowout. A search firm was unofficially gauging interest. Obviously, Doeren, with his Big Ten ties was interested. Also, for whatever reason, Purdue really appreciates the Wisconsin program and seems to want to emulate them. That's why they almost hired Paul Chryst, but instead the hired Hope for continuity. He showed interest. There were even some initial discussions on money. However, the decision was not official on Hope. After the Minnesota blowout, it was over. They gauged Doeren's interest, and offered somewhere from $1.5 million to $1.8 million. It is reported that it was a done deal. The rest is procedural, with not messing up NIU's season(though, Doeren won't be coaching them in the bowl game) and letting Hope finish the season. There were many people who said it was over.

However, the Butch Jones rumors started after all of this. It's very possible that Butch Jones actually expressed interest through the same back channels that Purdue was using to get Doeren. Obviously, he needs to be considered. This is supposedly what happened with Painter, as even Missouri didn't really believe he was an option until Painter started the process. That's why I think that Butch Jones is looking for a raise from Cincy, and is using Purdue as leverage. However, I would think that he would get the nod over Doeren, depending on what "done deal" really means.

This is for FavreFan.

First:
"It is reported that it was a done deal."
Then, a little bit later:
"There were many people who said it was over."
Then, a little bit later:
"However, the Butch Jones rumors started after all of this."
Now, I start to explain that things had changed, and that the reports of "done deal" were either inaccurate or no longer true:
"Obviously, he needs to be considered."
And finally:
"However, I would think that he would get the nod over Doeren, depending on what "done deal" really means."

It's very, very, very clear here that at the time of this post, I did not think that Doeren was a "done deal". I only referenced it to tell the story to RFDC on how things have changed and how Jones came out of nowhere.

So, FavreFan and others, stop saying otherwise.
