Kotaku says hold off on buying the Wii, not enough apps and games. Also, online features will need to be developed. They say the launch of the Wii U is better than the launch of the PS3 and XBox 360, but they couldn't bring themselves to say that the Wii U now is better than the PS3 or XBox 360 now. They said they are taking a wait and see approach.

They did like the Wii U Gamepad controller though.

edit: Also, ZombiU, the one game that looked pretty damn interesting, is getting bad reviews.

This was a given the day they announced the specs for the system. Hell, for me it was a given the day they released the WII and it wasn't HD. Based on the idiocy of that decision I pretty much wrote Nintendo off as a company and had 100% faith that every console they come out with since the WI will be garbage.

The reviews on ZombiU are the diarhea frosting on top of the dog shit cake. You're right, that was the ONLY game that looked halfway interesting.

What evidence? Clock speed for the GPU and the CPU? That's really shallow and pretty thin when it comes to discussing/comparing to consoles relative capabilities and power.

Depending on architecture of said components the clock speed can be pretty irrelevant.

Based on the resolutions console games are played it...it is a very important factor.

Earlier articles highlighted the memory architecture already.

CPU clock speeds combined with GPU core and memory speeds is pretty much all inclusive.

Overall resolution depends greatly on effective memory bandwidth which, as far as I know, hasn't been disclosed yet. CPU clock speeds don't have a huge influence but memory bandwidth and the quality of the GPU definitely do.

In fact true official details of the Wii U's specifications haven't been released by Nintendo. Besides the basics like amount of eDRAM, die size total system RAM, what has access to it, on-board storage and the like, we haven't seen official GPU/CPU speeds, shader counts, memory clock rates, individual component bandwidth, what can access the memory, etc. we really don't know. Nintendo is definitely holding back official in-depth specs for a reason.

Actually, I guess some of the CPU specs have been unofficially (grain of salt) outed thus far. 3-Core, 1.6GHZ, Out of Order Execution and based on a PPC750. The GPU was rumored to be based off of an AMD/ATI 5xxx series GPU which puts it well ahead of the Xenos (AMD/ATI X1800) or the PS3 RSX which runs a version of the Nvdia 7800.

This machine isn't really cutting edge by any means but it's more powerful than the XBOX360 and the PS3. Don't base your opinion on some ported games, although like the Wii I'm sure that 3rd parties will only pay fleeting attention to the Wii U and I don't think Nintendo cares.

you're gonna spend that kind of money for a side scrolling 2D platformer that would be better served on a handheld and is a step back from the mario games they put out on the prior system?

that's news to me. If that statement is true then I may not. The last one was the best in the series, in my opinion.

When you say last one are you talking about Super Mario Galaxy 2? If you are talking about Galaxy then you are in for a rude awakening when you play the new Mario game on the WiU. Unlike Galaxy its not a 3D game, its a 2D game similar to the mario games you get on the DS.

So its definitely a step back. Not saying it won't be a good game, I loved the New Super mario Bros on the DS, but there's no doubt those games are meant for handheld systems and are technilogically inferior to 3D console games.

Pretty sad statement that Nintendo would release a new system and come out wth a Mario game that is a step back from the mario games they released on the previous system.

You are wrong.

A game doesn't need to be 3D to be "amazing" or "current."

Some of the top games of this generation are also 2D:

Limbo, Mark of the Ninja, Outland, and of course New Super Mario Bros Wii

Bullshit. Most of those games are downloadable cheapies. If that's what you are looking for when you drop $$$ on a brand new system then all the power to you. Me, I want cutting edge top of the line games, not crap that's equivalent to the stuff I can buy on arcade for $10.

A game doesn't need to be published by EA or Activision to be a great game.

Also, your argument fails, because if you truly wanted top of the line games, you'd be a PC gamer and not a console gamer. You're using gaming tech that is 7-8 years old. Not exactly the "latest and greatest."

Answer me this....would you pay $60 for Limbo or any of those other indie games you mentioned?

No, of course you wouldn't. 99% of all 2D side scrollers being made today are available for cheap downloads on Arcade. The other 1% is a $60 launch title for the WiiU.

You don't spend hundreds of dollars on a new system to then turn around and drop $60 on a game that is a step backwards technologically speaking from the previous game in the series and should really cost $10-$20 as a download.

No. I'm not talking about Galaxy 2 but thanks for assuming. I'm talking about the last Super Mario Bros. for the Wii. That would be the previous system, not the DS. As long as the new game is the same or better, I'll plunk down the money.

I've said this before.

Notice the leading "again."

I don't recall you saying you've even played the system. Probably missed the post. Don't worry about finding it, I'll just take your word for it.

Nintendo is going to great lengths to try to simulate a shortage of available consoles.

It's Deja Vu all over again.

I have to agree...got a Wii U used with that game thrown in for $200, best $200 I've spent in a while. Other than groceries, I suppose.

Not really a good sign. If Capcom or Square does this, that'll be the nail in the coffin.

I know what you're saying...but without EA... I kind of view that as the nail in the coffin already. At least in terms of hoping to compete with PS4 and Xbox 720 / Durango / Infinity.

Everyone thought it was bad when Square decided to stop making games for Nintendo systems, but that was just one company & they survived. However, in this case when you consider everything, you may not be too far off.

@ this point Nintendo can do 3 things:

1. For their next gen (which should be sooner rather than later) create a system w/ the "gamer" in mind as opposed to a party/family system.

2. Stay the course & create another "innovative" system that nobody will want because it doesn't have the latest Madden/Final Fantasy.

3. Pull a Sega & just develop games for other systems.

In all honesty, the quality of the hardware since the SNES has steadily declined. Yes, they had the 64-bit system afterwards, but f'd it up by making it a cartridge system instead of CD. Then, when they come out w/ their disc system, it had possibly the weirdest fucking controller ever. Then there was the Wii w/ the Wiimotes, which were great for certain games, but others (esp. 3rd party) seemed lacking.

I think nobody wants to pay $500~ for a Nintendo "family" console. The people who are willing to spend that think down on it & those who would enjoy it either can't or won't spend the money.

What a disaster for Nintendo, riding high of the Wii they release the WiiU without developer support, no Virtual Console, a buggy and slow OS and no real 1st party games of consequence. And it's 350 clams.

My body is not ready.

They have a nice looking bundle, with Mario Kart 8, another wheel(you can use the wii controllers and wheel still), and a digital download of New Super Mario Bros U for $329.

I only played Mario Kart Wii a couple times, but I hated the wheel. Preferred controller.

That being said, I have no Wii or Wii accessories anyway.

My feelings on Mario Kart 8 are pretty much the same as they were for Super Mario 3D World...looks like a game that should be able to drive sales of hardware...game looks like a riot.
