Tough talk from Rahm on cop crackdowns at gang funerals


Gang funerals in Chicago will be treated like “gang events” — with pat-downs and all of the police muscle that entails — because gang leaders have shown “no respect” for neighborhoods where those funerals take place, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday.

One day after Chicago Police officers showed up force at a gang funeral, Emanuel warned gang leaders to get used to it. Gang funerals will no longer be treated as sacred events.


“Where there’s a gang funeral — given that they have shown no respect for a place of worship — we’re gonna change how they’re gonna operate. The Police Department is gonna change the way they deal with gang funerals,” the mayor said.

This seems to put cops in an extremely precarious position, especially with the sort of taunting tone of the mayor. I mean, gang members have friends and family who are not in gangs. I'm picturing a lot of indignant Grandmas and pissed-off mourners.

I understand the thought process but if I'm the parent of the kid that died, I'm pretty upset that now I cant even mourn in peace. Yeah, the kid may have made mistakes but Aunt Sally has to get strip searched before she can pay her respects... That seems a little cold to me.

If I were the dead kids family, I would be irate that his hoodlum friends showed up to his funeral knowing that they are the cause of it. I would be so mad at the situation that I would want all of those punks to pay for his death.

Yes, they have relatives who are not in the gangs and many of them take responsibility for the deaths by harboring them in their basements.

Really hate listening to the complaints about the police, because whenever a shooting takes place, nobody has any info about yet, yet everyone was outside.

I'm all in favor of criminals shooting at each other, and leaving us innocent people out of it. If someone wants to have a gang fight at a funeral, they can have at it, they just need to make sure Granny is at a safe distance. I'm not advocating for innocent people getting shot.
