Oh, the old man Mare, he ain't what he used to be,
Ain't what he used to be, ain't what he used to be.
The old man Mare, he ain't what he used to be,
Like he was years ago.
Like he was years ago, like he was years ago.
The old man Mare, he ain't what he used to be,
Like he was years ago.
The old man Mare, can't kick off the rubber tee,
Kick off the rubber tee, kick off the rubber tee
The old man Mare, can't kick off the rubber tee
Like he did years ago.
Like he did years ago, like he did years ago,
The old man Mare, can't kick off the rubber tee
Like he did years ago.

Olindo Mare actually hit some big kicks for the Carolina Panthers last year at Soldier Field. He went 3-for-5 in the Panthers' 34-29 loss to the Bears, complete with a 29 yard attempt blocked & a 52 yard attempt that was short. Also, remember Doug Brien? Before Robbie Gould, Brien was the last Bear kicker to attempt field goals, and didn't last long.

Mare was 22-28 last year. That sucks.

He's also the oldest Bear on this roster with his impromptu signing today. Olindo Mare is 39.

I would have thought Nate Kaeding was the best kicker on the market

I thought the Chargers' kicker was also injured. Nick Novak replaced Nate in San Diego.

I wouldn't read anything into that...yet. Let's not forget Jason Campbell was signed for just 1 season, while Josh McCown was on "Scott Podsednik's couch", as The SCORE's Matt Spiegel calls it at the start of this NFL season.

In plain English, the Bears might be in the market for another backup QB next year. Seriously.

In broken English, "Bears QB backup bad, next year new one." :P

This is a huge deal. He was pretty much automatic. You never worried about him coming in and making a big kick and his range increased over the years. IMO he was their most reliable offensive player.

I concur. You are going from one of the best kickers to one of the worst. Anything outside 40 could be shakey.

You have to worry about the wind too on the kicks inside 40.

Two of the next three are in domes.

Would Gould be able to come off IR if they get to the playoffs?

Not sure what they changed the rules to.
