First, I don't have a dog in this fight. I have friends that hold very strong opinions on both sides. I see a ton of hypocrisy with both. I'm purposely Mini Ditka'ing myself, because I think this needs a dedicated thread about why things should stay the same, have every gun removed as soon as possible, or somewhere in between. Holding to the whole constitutional amendment deal? Let's hear it. Do you want to defend your family? Do you think the elimination of guns would eliminate that need?

Try to keep it civil kids.

More innocent lives would be saved if guns didn't exist. Thus, we shouldn't have guns.

For the once in a million chance that a person with a gun will defend his family from a gunman trying to kill them, we get 3 or 4 mass shootings a year. Not to metion the random bullets that fly in chicago that kill a couple hundred a year. Thus, guns should be banned.

The whole "Ban all Guns" thing wouldn't work. The cat is out of the bag in that respect. It comes down to access to firearms and what type of firearms/ammo/accessories are available for legal purchase.

Who is able to have access?
What rules are there for access?
What weapons are accessible?
Who is able to sell said weapons?

Even the biggest gun toteing redneck has to agree something needs to be done.

The NRA doesnt even give that much money to politicians to make this a dealbreaker for the Republicans.

You'd think so. But the standard response I've seen is this tragedy is being used as an angle. Believing politicians are attention grabbing assholes is a belief I fully support. But in my mind, this just gives people on either side of the argument someone to blame.

We toil under a government that has traded arms for other goods for centuries.

Our present administration sold guns illegally that ended killing a member of law enforcement in this country.

I don't have a chit in this game either but for those who are sane enough to sit back and say to themselves that I can legally and responsibly own a firearm, then by all means go buy one.

For those who don't understand when given the realities above, that some of their fellow citizens feel that they may need to be protected for their own government, well then your name is ignorance.

This is a perfect example of the complexity of the argument. Right now, I make a joke about people that need to protect themselves from the scary government. "Because dem is taking away our guns when it's run by one of dem, ya knows." But fifty years from now? Ninety years from now? What if our society becomes completely unarmed, and another frightening terrorist event happens. Democracy doesn't fade slowly, but immediately.

I would like to live in a gun less society. I understand why I can't.

The government is more of an argument for gun ownership, then against it.

There's a ton of sense being made in the Speeps thread as well. I started this because it's specifically about the gun issue, not when to debate it.

KS, I've noticed the mass shootings tend to be people that are mentally ill, or put unnecessary pressure on.

Guns aren't the issue. They are part of the issue, yes. And I am extremely bothered by this story to a degree I don't care to get into.

But guns are a tool.

That kind of bothers me too. There's always a reason/excuse for these people. Can't it ever be that they're just mean son of a bitches?

I'm not excusing a single damn thing. But it's easy to say that, because there will always be some jackoff on every news channel saying it's exclusively the fault of guns, illness, etc. to promote their personal agenda.

IDK if you're trying to be funny, but this is where gun rights advocates lose me. To categorize a gun as if it's a hammer or a wrench is asinine. It's a weapon. It's only purpose is that of a weapon, unlike a knife, which is utilitarian. To say it's anything else is irresponsible. Have your guns, but stop the charade.

To suggest we ban guns entirely just doesn't make any sense. To be in a place where only the government is armed goes against everything this country was founded on. It also doesn't jive with a country supposedly based on freedom.

I think you can make it harder to get guns, but that's not going to solve the problem. Because it's the people, not the guns that are the issue.

Actually. it is what you were saying.

The world is full of mean people that don't slaughter innocent children.

The cause of this shooting may never be fully known, but we will have a real good idea. We already have that pic being painted it appears.

Would I be OK if Guns are totally illegal yes, but I also realize it's not going to happen.

Thus Semi, and Auto weapons make these types of mass killings much easier and that is why the focus needs to be on these weapons. If this guy walked in and had to reload after every shot, I can only imagine in this case and many others, the death total is much much lower.

So you are never going to get rid of guns, but things that make mass killings easier are where the start needs to be.

I think in California owning an illegal oozie is a $500 fine. Thats really pushing the limit.

Governments should have a buyback program for 6 months. Small % of the value, but alleviates the owner from going to jail as the punishment needs to be much higher.

Just like running onto the field at sporting events. It's in our DNA.

Bigger fine for running onto Jerrys field, that is really our field, than owning an Oozi in CA! Of course Jerry wanted that fine made into a city law and it got done in 30 days amazingly! Just amazing how that happens!

Keep seeing this nonsense on Facebook.

Arming school teachers definitely seems like the right idea.

A knife-wielding man slashed 22 children and an adult at an elementary school in central China on Friday, state media reported, the latest in a series of attacks on schoolchildren in the country.

Peeps, I've intentionally avoided Facebook since this thing happened. I think I'll give it about a week before I go back on there.

Facebook is the worst. You don't need to let everyone know you are against the killing of children. We're all saddened by it already.
