I think the 570s were probably a pretty bad musical decade, what with the Dark Ages and all, but I could be wrong.

Actually, now that I think about it (and using my own very subjective guidelines, almost all of which rely heavily upon orchestral music, chamber music, and opera), the 70s might be the worst decade in the last 400 years in music.

I think in years to come, this decade will go down as by far the worst for music. The last 7 years have been a pathetic embarassment for music lovers. It will be followed close by a very forgettable 90's. 60's and 70's were top notch.

I just think there will be very little music considered classic from this decade and if you compare the popular music now to that of the 60's, 70's, and even 80's that it doesn't hold a candle. Sure there are great groups nowadays that you might know of and love but the mainstream popular stuff like Maroon 5, 50 Cent, and Fergie will be what this decade is remembered for. In the 60's and 70's we have popular groups like Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. Now not so much.

True, but similarly the greatest contribution from the 80's came from groups and artists who weren't incredibly popular at the time, like Sonic Youth, REM, Replacements, Husker Du, etc.

Popular stuff then was just as bad- overly processed dance stuff, bad new wave, etc.

Like Baku said, the 80s mostly consisted of overly-produced generic dance music.

Sonic Youth formed in 1981, as did a slew of other American independents. Alternately, beneath the bubble of commodified 80's pop/dance, there were important strides made in other electronic music: The 80's put Chicago on the map as house capital of the world; Detroit became reknown for its black, middle-class innovators who began creating a sound that would become known as "techno"; L.A. went through an important acid/psych revival in both guitar and synth music early in the decade. It's easy to generalize about any decade.

I was all of four years old when they moved to Boston. Isn't the frequency (V103, home to the Magestic Gent) still based in Oak Park?

I think so...But BMX is now public radio, as I recall.
