He was not a bad coach, but he was somewhat overrated because they won the Super Bowl. He certainly became a Chicago mythic folklore sports hero who has continued to milk one Super Bowl win for almost 30 years.

Damn. You've become an increasingly better poster since your return. Not necessarily good, but still better than awful.

I think people become fixated on the Super Bowl and post Super Bowl career. Ditka changed the twenty or so more year culture of a moribound organization. The team quickly and steadily increased in quality from the moment he took the position to the point that double digit wins and division titles were the standard by which to judge the success of a year. Expectations were not the same before and have not been the same since.

OH HO! We have someone who actually followed the Bears in the 70s and 80s and has a clue!

That was a long time ago in an NFL far, far away.

I credit buddy Ryan with the success a bit more than ditka, the defense was outstanding ...while the offense was just o.k.

Agree with mini d not great but not awful.

Just OK? They were best running football team in the NFL for nearly a decade.

What have they ever been good at offensively in the past 20 years?

It was more than just OK.

Ranked 2nd in overall offense according to Pro Football Reference.

Take a closer look. Starting with 1983, Ditka's offense was never worse than 13th in the NFL. Top 10 in 6 out of 10 years.

People always think that because the D was so great.

But they were an actual "Team" which is a novel concept these days when a head coach can apparently only care about one aspect of the game and be just fine.
