My company is switching to a non accrued vacation policy... does anyone have any familiarity with this type of policy?

Basically, I no longer have allotted vacation time. It's up to my manager how much I get. I just submit a request, and he approves or denies it.

The company is doing it because it now gets to clean up the ledger of all vacation time payouts. Brilliant for them. And they spin it to the employees as "no limits!" Lots of people are freaked out, because they think their managers (or managers down the road) are going to be dicks about it (I'm not worried for now, because I love my manager... but managers change, obviously). In all the case studies I've seen (Netflix does it), employees ultimately take less time because they feel guilty about asking for time off... and because in the old system, you would burn days 'just because' so you wouldn't lose them, or so you didn't hit the maximum.

So anyone have this policy? Like it? Hate it?

I have this and this is exactly how I feel when asking for vacation.

Sounds like a perfect system to have to listen to 40 year old women bitch all day about Bill or Betty getting to take a half day extra then they do. And I CANT BELIEVE that he rejected their request to have the day after Christmas off even though half the office requested it 2 months before them.

Have fun with this cluster fuck.

So this means a ass kisser (with 3 years with the company) in one department might get 4 weeks off while another employee (10 years) with a asshole manager gets 2 weeks? How the hell is that fair or even legal? Never heard of this before.

I would immediately request 4 weeks off next year to start, and if denied for any other of the weeks, ask which ones work.

I'd then take a few three day weekends off at random points during the year.

Yea, there is nothing in place about fairness, although I have heard there will be a review process should you get denied and you're unhappy about the decision.

Seriously,in this era of high unemployment,it's terrible how these companies figure out new ways to hold thier employees over the coals.

That's the thought process a lot of colleagues have. This is going to be a HUGE cost saver to them over time. Many are equating it to taking away benefits. On the bright side, we're all getting a check in Jan for our current vacation balance.

They arent cutting vacation time. If anything you might get a few extra days. It is just going to be annoying listening to people bitch about it.

That will be taxed a hellava lot more than if you took 1 day here or 2 days there.

I would put that money in the savings account (or 401k). It will be needed if you get launched (when you would usually get it)

I'm going to guess that it won't be that bad. Once you reach a certain limit of days requested off, you will then start getting rejected unless the day off is for good reason.

It's basically the same system as before but you don't get compensated for days leftover.

Exactly. Plan your same vacation schedule and then ask for a few days off as the year goes on.

I think you can basically bank on being able to get time around the holidays off IN ADDITION to your vacation time with this new policy, because your managers won't have much reason to say no when no one is in the office and nothing is getting done anyways.

Are all these days paid or unpaid? We have a "use 'em or lose 'em" policy here, but can take as many unpaid days off as we want/need, within reason.

Did they go thru anything about the possibility of being bumped from your vacation? That is having a day approved, then having somebody else (higher rank, more seniority, etc) take the same day so you lose your time.

All paid.

Second scenario hasn't come up in discussions at all, but I'm not sure that would be an issue.

I don't see why anyone here is complaining. Bucky Chris can probably now take more days off than Mac and Spiegal now.

Vacation Days...I have not had one of those in 4.5 years.
And let me tell ya, you are more inclined to work a few extra hours to prepare for the "days off" i.e. the office is closed.

I think it is a pretty clever idea, and ultimately it will balance out. Marge might get another day more than June and Bruce, but I suspect that there will be an excel or vision document for tracking.

Sounds like the idea would be to keep a list of who takes vacation when and how much. Then use that next time people are laid off. My guess is within 3-4 years everyone left is taking significantly less days off.

Sounds like a great deal for the company, more work/bitching for the supervisors, and an overall clusterfuck-in-waiting. On a more personal note, while reviewing my 2013 schedule, with two "special work assignment periods" planned and training and vacation taken, I am only going to perform my "normal" job for 83 days all year.

I'm not sure on that. I work for a big company, 10k plus employees so I still think the biggest reason is money saving. I just learned the executives have been using this policy for awhile and they like it, but I'm not sure that is relevant to how well it will work for the rest of the company.

What a stupid idea. I have currently 2 weeks vacation, next year I get 3. If my company did this, I would still be taking my 3 weeks. My new asst only has 1 week, and my 2 inside reps have 1 and 2 weeks respectively. Obviously I am going to be taking more time off than them. So that means I should get laid off?
No, and thats the biggest problem with this sort of policy. The guy who has 4 weeks and counts on those 4 weeks not just for vacations, but to take care of some of his kids dealings or his elderly mother now gets fucked in the long run.

That is why the days have to be approved by managers. The 22 year old kid just out of college is not going to get 9 weeks of vacation...

I can't imagine what the new hire negotiations are like in this type of system.

How many weeks of vacation to do I get? As many as you want.
Is there a limit? No, but your manager will eventually not approve it.
So what if I take 4 weeks a year, is that alright? If your manager approves it.
What if they deny me more than 3 days? ....
Ok, I'm going to plan for about 4 weeks of vacation a year.
