That is not correct.

If only there was a way to not drink before you drive.

My trick is eating 3 or 4 burritos before I go out drinking, that way I can only stomach about a half glass of beer before I have to stop. Still have yet to be popped for a DUI.

I know that scientifically a 170 lb. man should be able to metabolize a basic beer an hour and stay well under the legal limit. In practice with the way the breathalyzers may be calibrated, I don't believe that's always the case. Also, you can be cited for DUI even if you're under that .08 limit depending on the circumstances.

There are two ways to eliminate drunk driving. Eliminate booze or eliminate cars. That's reality. Nobody ever gets behind the wheel thinking he's going to be dangerous. That's because he's impaired. But suddenly a person is expected to demonstrate good judgment after he's been drinking. It's not realistic.

Don't drive drunk is just like say no to drugs or let's deport illegals because they're illegal. It's pie in the sky. People are going to drink and they're going to drive drunk. If you think that makes them Charles Manson, that's fine. I just don't feel that way.

(Public Service) Post of the Year, unfortunate reality division.

For the record, I never felt as guilty about my own "transgressions" until a mildly sauced guy ran into my car (w/my then 2 yr old in the back). Something about stones and glass houses.

Thankfully, he had his insurance info & his company covered it quickly w/o the CPD having to be called to the scene. I hope he never had that issue arise again.

That is why they need to demonstrate good judgment before they start drinking. It's pretty easy. If you drove yourself to the bar, then drink one beer an hour for a maximum of 3 hours and then wait 30 minutes before you leave(unless you are really small this won't get a man over .08).

Also, I would really hope that no one loses their mind after they have a third beer. The fact is that most people who drive drunk know they are doing it and think they'll get away with it. I doubt many people who blow a .15 are sitting at the police station saying "How could this happen?". They know.

I don't know much about body chemistry but I can tell you something that really happened within the last year. My business partner had an Intoxalock installed in his car. One night after work we knocked back a few. I probably had three or four over a couple hours and he had six or seven. The next day at noon- twelve hours later- we had a meeting in Oak Brook and he was going to drive. We got in his car and he blew over a 1. I ended up driving and it caused him a big headache with his case worker and added an additional three months on his Intoxalock. The kid was a basket case. He couldn't believe it was possible and frankly, neither could I.

Anyway, I'm not saying driving drunk is a good thing, but I think the demonization of drunk drivers is just a push for a new kind of Prohibition. America is a nation founded by Puritans. Their puritanical ideals run deep. I'm not talking about a guy who is loaded and weaving all over the road or driving super aggressively. That guy is an asshole whether alcohol is causing his erratic driving or it's just his own jerkoff personality. I drive alot. Every morning I have more than one asshole riding a foot from my rear end at 75 or 80 mph. Why aren't we demonizing them? Because they are sober?

That kind of sucks but it's also one of the hazards when you are on probation. You have to be more careful. However, it wouldn't shock me if he continued to drink when he got home.

The thing is that drunk driving causes accidents that wouldn't otherwise happen. Reckless driving does too, and if you cause an accident while doing it you'll face bigger punishments.

Every driver will be worse while drunk driving. That's the problem. We also are demonizing texting while driving for the same reason.

Yeah, me either, but the kid is a drunk not a complete moron. He damn sure wasn't going to try to start the car if he thought there was the slightest possibility it would even be .01. There's a zero tolerance when you have that thing in the car. It's not enough that it prevents the car from starting.

Anyway, my point is that I think everyone metabolizes differently. A guy that drinks a lot might be starting with a higher baseline of blood alcohol. I don't know if that means he's an impaired driver or not.

I guess for me, I'm very results oriented. So I have difficulty squaring the fact that if my mother went out to drive (she has a valid license but I've taken away her keys) she would be less competent behind the wheel than you or I would after downing a six pack of Imperial Stout in an hour. I'm sure of that. But we would be seen by society as devils while she is just a little old lady who doesn't drive as well as she once did. If the point is she has no control over her ability but we do, I get it. I just don't think that makes her safe in traffic. Just like I think you'd prevent a lot of road deaths by raising the driving age to 21.

That is what concerns me about the DUI checkpoints. I'm not going to feel sorry for any person who gets a DUI while swerving in traffic or falls asleep at a stoplight, but if some person tries to be responsible and hits the arbitrary .08 and gets treated the same as some guy who blew a .22 I don't think that is fair. Ultimately though, I think unless you are really small you can have 3 beers in 3 hours and be both safe and safe from getting a DUI.

At least in 10 or 20 years we won't have to worry about this, as our cars will be able to drive drunk people home.

The average guy hits that .08 a lot easier than you might think. My advice would be not to blow if you've had one that day.
I'd say this is true. There are sometimes I have 4 or 5 beers and don't feel the slightest bit buzzed. Other times I'm halfway thru my 2nd or 3rd one and I can already feel it.

2 glasses of Champagne in about an hour period this past Saturday night pretty much did the trick.

Professional drinkers should carry a breathalyzer. All my banker buddies do.

I don't see it as a push for prohibition as much as DUI is an industry. As it's been said elsewhere in this thread, DUIs aren't really that huge of an issue in the actual city proper, as there's real crimes going on all over the place.... it's not like cops rolling the honeypot that is rand road in lake zurich (who loves to boast that they get the most DUIs in the chicago area or whatever) or even in my hometown of elk grove village, i used to read the local paper and the EGV cops would basically cherry pick the oasis trailer park on elmhurst road right by 90 there and you'd see that like 90-95% of DUIs in elk grove happened right there.

DUIs are a business, basically. I got my DUI in 2009... uhh story for another time, there was a car chase and whatnot.... but yeah, whether or not you hire a lawyer, then you gotta go to court and they're gonna slam you with fines ($1050 for me, which i was told was low) and then you'll get your DUI outpatient (which is usually like $1000-2000ish, i think, as i was fortunate enough to get into a state subsidized place) then if you get supervision or probation you gotta pay them something every month, if they give you random drug drops you're paying for those.... you're paying for the VIP/victim-impact-panel... and if you ever get another DUI, you're going through all that stuff again with even more severe fines and higher levels of outpatient and etc.

i have a friend who managed to get three DUIs before he stopped driving for awhile.... he told me that in the end each DUI cost him $5000-7500 when it was all said and done... i got lucky, i got hooked up with good people and whatnot, otherwise, DUIs are basically just another peasant tax.... obviously some people really deserve them, especially when they injure/kill/etc, otherwise the casual 0.10 DUI that you catch on 12 in lake zurich is just "the game" if you will... and why i never drove around on these stupid holidays. roadblocks are basically tollbooths, if you really think about it. they're not doing any public service, they're raking in the cash from the impound to the outpatient.

agree with much of what you said there sini...

if you wanted to eliminate DUI's , why not put the breath interlock device on every car? make everyone do it , every new car being produced has one
it's the law for everyone to wear seatbelts, so why not

Then who would call into B&B?

I'll have two drinks tops when going out and driving. And that will be over two or more hours. If I'm planning on drinking, I make appropriate plans. I think I could probably drive better than most halfway loaded, but the risks are just too high. Lose my job, my house, wind up in prison, who knows? Not worth it.

I can only go from personal experience. Been out drinking a few times and used theirs. Once I had a few drinks, once I had quite a few and once I had many, many drinks and all 3 times the numbers were in line with what I expected. No idea what model breathalyzer these were, but the mere fact that this "check yourself" is in place is at least going to make you more aware. Not saying this is right, just saying that's the way it is with them.
