The bowl games are bizarre relics of the early days of American football. It was a regional sport and conferences meant basically everything. "National Champions" were simply writers speculating. Bowls were essentially a prize for good conference performance. They were largely meaningless... akin to playing someone from another country in another sport.

However, due in large part to the national popularity and TV accessibility... and, of course, the morphing of conferences, bowls are struggling for relevancy. The BCS was the solution they came up with. I think we all agree it is convoluted and largely meaningless for bowls outside the BCS. But with all the monetary incentives, it is difficult to see it going away.

But I am suprised to see that alot of these bowls are still profitable. I assume if more and more schools don't sell out their allotment due to "Shitty Bowl Fatigue" I think we could potentially see a thinning of the ranks in bowls. But fans need to stop going to crappy bowls. Unfortunately, I'm a hypocrite as I have already booked my tix to THE GRANDADDY OF THEM ALL... THE TAXSLAYER.COM GATOR BOWL!!!!

 It's like I'm on some bizzaro message board where basic sports concepts are not understood. It's awesome when your team goes to a BCS bowl. I don't really know why it has to be explained simply because it's a different system than the pro leagues.

If you win your conference, sure, have fun at a BCS bowl. The hand-wringing that the #11 team in the nation didn't get an at large bid and the #16 team did is dumb. Oklahoma and big game Bob have pissed down their leg enough in BCS games, let somebody else do it.

Interesting article which illustrates how MAC coaches used their voting power fairly while Big 12 coaches tried to put Oklahoma in by voting them high and voting NIU low.

As if Northern Illinois didn't need any added motivation for its match-up against Florida State Tuesday night in Miami, the Huskies got a little more. And it comes from an unlikely place: a rant from an Orange Bowl representative towards an NIU staffer.

“You guys [NIU] don't even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn't even want you here.”

According to a source, the exchange took place the other night in a hospitality suite. The Orange Bowl rep had compared NIU to Duke. The NIU rep responded by pointing out that the Huskies, who are riding a 12-game winning streak, have been to bowl games in five consecutive seasons. The conversation escalated from there, the source says.

The 12-1 Huskies' presence in the Orange Bowl has been a sore subject for many from the moment when the BCS Bowl pairings were announced in early December. ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit even called it “a joke” that the Huskies were invited to play in the Orange Bowl. One NIU player responded by heaving an orange at the TV after hearing Herbstreit's comments.

Florida State, which earlier this season did lose to an unranked N.C. State team, is a 14-point favorite.

Disappointed in Jordan Lynch. Otherwise, it was about what I expected.

Lynch is a gutty kid but NIU hadn't seen a team with speed like that all year. The closest they saw was Iowa where Lynch was bottled up except for a single play. FSU was all over him like flies on shit and being able to have corners lock down receivers man to man was the big difference.

Hats off to NIU for qualifying to play in the BCS but the reality was that team was not in the same league as past non AQ teams like TCU/Boise/Utah that had the athletes to match up with the big boys.

I missed the Iowa game, so that makes a lot of sense. I was more disappointed with his passing. Everything was a dart. Didn't have a lot of touch. Not the same kid I watched throughout the season. But I suppose the FSU defense and national spotlight can rattle the kid a bit.

Agreed that this year's NIU team is not in that same class of non-AQ teams. They were a little better than Hawaii though.

Welp, more ignominy for Northern Illinois.

I think it's cool that NIU made it into the BCS. I can't see Illinois making the Orange Bowl any time soon.

I'd like to think that college football would be like the NFL in that any given Sunday any team can win. But the reality is the top schools and conferences can acquire bigger and faster players and unless the more talented team doesn't show up the more talented team typically wins.
