Answer a simple question. It's not that hard.

I download a trial version of a piece of software and I was contacted about how much I liked it and would I like to talk further with a rude followup email that basically said "Hey, answer my emails or I assume you have no interest and let me know if I still should track this". I responded that I was interested on one specific part of the software and what the pricing would be for that one specific part.

The response was to ask to schedule a conference call to discuss my needs and if the fit was a good one with no mention of pricing. Hey idiot, I used your software and wanted to buy it! Of course it's a fit! This could have been the easiest sale you've made all year. Instead, I'll go to a place where I don't have to deal with a salesman trying to sell me a whole bunch of garbage I'll never use.

I understand it's probably effective, but it seems like almost all salesman are more hassle than they are worth.

I've never been a fan of giving pricing in an email like that without discussing first. You could be trying to pull information for competitive reasons (especially if the pricing isn't listed in any format on the website).

My last job I was advised to never give pricing via email, and only under NDA. Also had to go through a formal process to get a proposal approved prior to sending out. Could have been that. He could have also wanted to talk about getting you a discount... which is another thing he wouldn't put in writing in an email.

Deal with them everyday and I have to constantly tell myself BE NIZE M'FER,
I know its a hard gig and that they get told to go fuck themselves 80% of the time but give me what I
want and quit the hard sell.

I obviously don't know the specifics, but it may be that the single part of the software you want also isn't sold individually, although if it's actually separate it's illegal to only sell in a package. Again, specifics there matter, but just throwing that out there.

I'm not buying a nuclear sub here. It's a fairly standard piece of software that I know what the price is. He's clearly trying to oversell me into the bigger version of added features.

The prices are posted on the site, but it's for the entire package of tools. I only want one.

I think he wants to sell the whole thing to me. If it's not sold individually, he should just tell me. There are a lot of other competitors out there that offer it individually.

I get what you're saying. But if I am a salesmen and it's only sold in the package, I'm not telling you that over email. Chances are you aren't buying the entire package, so I'd rather have the chance to try to talk to you.

But all in all, you're probably right. He's probably just trying to sell you more.

I think so too. This was actually something I had used before, but they recently bundled it together with a whole bunch of other things.

On another note, we went on vacation, and we were moderately pressured to attend one of those stupid timeshare-like things. Well, eventually they offered enough for us to waste an hour so we did it. We sat through it, and we were polite but when it came time for the buy we said no thanks. He asked why, and I just said the timing isn't right, maybe in a few years. He said "Well, you can't keep pushing it off or you'll never do it" and I said "Well, I can't right now" and he said "What price could get you to do it now?" and I said "To be honest, I don't think any price would" and then he went on and on so eventually I just said "Listen, it's not going to happen" and he then says "Oh, so basically there was never any chance you were going to buy?" and I said "Well, yeah" and almost said "We just had some free time and wanted the free money and food" but didn't to be polite and he said "Well, you should have told me that earlier and not wasted my time!" and walked away and we had to find our own way out of the building. I still got our check and free food certificates!

I actually am glad he did that at the end. At the start, I felt bad wasting his time. At the end, I hoped I had wasted enough time he didn't get the next appointment group.

There is good & bad in any profession. Sales is no different. The problem with many sales people is they don't listen & ask enough questions. They get diarrhea of the mouth without taking the time to understand the customers business, needs, & objectives.

Attending a time share presentation with high pressure sales tactics just to get a free vacation & food is silly in my opinion. I'll never do it.

It wasn't a free vacation. We were already there. They made it worth our while to do it though.

In Vegas,I got a free buffet and free magic show (Lance Burton) for sitting through a timeshare presentation. I felt like I needed a 2 hour shower after dealing with the salesmen. I can't believe I went along with that, but loved the free stuff.

But still. The free stuff is never worth having to deal with these scumbags, is it? No thanks.

I've spent my whole career selling to both marketing/sales departments and IT. In general, I strongly prefer working with the IT people. Much less of douchebags.

Light bulb people suck though.

I doubt we do it again, but it basically paid for our entertainment all day and we got two free meals out of it. We immediately went out and enjoyed the day afterwards too.

I recall two extremely low-cost vacations we have taken in nice resorts -- one in Scottsdale and one in Orlando. The stipulation was we had to sit through a 90 minute timeshare presentation at each. The Scottsdale one, which I believe was at a Hyatt property, was very low key. The Orlando one however, which was at a Marriott resort, did turn into high pressure. The guy would not shut up. But I simply told him that he could talk until my ear fell off but I just was not going to purchase anything that day.

Regardless, they were both well worth it. Terrific properties at which I otherwise would have never stayed, and at a very reasonable cost.
