A lot of the attendance figures count tickets schools are forced to purchase but are never used. It is even worse than reported. The Purdue picture was at kickoff.
There are a lot of bad bowl games with bad attendance. I won't argue that.

Attendance is good for the bowls worth going to. It goes up and down based mostly on how crazy the fanbases are.

So why again is the bowl system better than a playoff?

I think the 2 team, 4 team, and 16 team playoff is better than the bowl system. I don't look forward to the 8 team playoff that is inevitable. I think it's worse than the current system.

You can't cite the fact that the Heart of Dallas bowl isn't any good in this debate. Everyone knows it's mostly useless. It could just as easily be cut out of the current system with no real issues.

Why is the 8-team playoff bad but the 2, 4 and 16 teams ok?

Once they see the money the 4 team playoff draws, I don't see how they don't expand it. Anything as it pertains to student scheduling is pure rubbish given the FCS (D-II or whatever it's called) conducts a 16 team playoff from Nov 24 - Jan 5.....that would be unbelievable to watch

Basically, an 8 team playoff destroys the bowl system without giving sufficient access to most teams to make up for it. Unless you are one of about 15 teams in the country, you don't have a real shot at making the playoffs more than once a decade and even that would be stretching it. An 8 team playoff would basically have Ohio State/Michigan, 2 or 3 SEC schools, some token small school, the Big 12 champ, and the Pac 12 champ, and then some other school or the Big Ten champ. Add in Notre Dame and most schools can basically just not worry about the postseason.

A 16 team playoff is much more open. Most teams can make it to the top 16 with a good season. It's really hard to get to the top 8 unless you go undefeated in an average conference or one loss in a good conference.

The playoff systems (whichever one you wan) will in no way improve attendance. Yes it would be huge and make a ton of tv money attendance will not change. The fans of these schools in a shitty economy can't afford to go to one bowl game now. You think they are going to go to 2 or 3 consecutive games at different locations?

True, but just make it best record home attendance. Any big school's stadium usually holds more than these NFL stadiums anyways.

It will improve attendance at early round games if multiple games are played at one location. That way, four teams (or more) split the attendance instead of only two. Similar to early round games in the basketball tourney.

Yeah, it would have to be done "regionally" like the basketball tourney.
