I can wait 3 weeks to watch the season finale of Boardwalk Empire, but it's painful to watch the Bears even an hour behind to avoid commercials.

Remember, the locals are all free in HD. I actually do believe my bill will be less. I think that's the entire reason non-cable companies are even trying to achieve it. Otherwise, I'm not going to pay more for less channels.

I know, but people really aren't paying for the B1G that don't watch it. It's just how it's billed.

The same guy who watches Big Ten football only on his television is paying for the Food Network and Fox News.

I don't think it will make much different to the sports networks. They'll charge more, and people will pay more.

It will hurt forgettable networks. I think we can all get along without NatGeo and TruTv if we have to even if they have some worthwhile shows.

The internet is making sure that won't be the case.

Sucks for Al-Jazeera

But do you think you're paying for past performance with Jackson? I don't believe he's realized his full capablity and the early 30s is usually the time for a pitcher like him.

I know you and I both agree about Floyd and his value and the fact that teams are willing to give guys no better than he is long term deals at 12-15 million a year while the Sox seem desperate to dump Floyd gives me pause. But maybe they aren't so desperate to do that and it's just media talk.

In any case, I think in this market, the Jackson signing was pretty good.

Have you ever tried to use over the air HD? I'm far enough away from NYC that almost none of the stations come in at all. Also, you still want a guide and a dvr which isn't free either.

They can try, but there is a reason it hasn't worked.

Ultimately, the cost savings would have to come by the cable networks getting less money. I don't see them accepting anything less. If anything, they are all signing deals for streaming through your cable provider.

I have been hearing about Jackson's potential for decade when he was with the Dodgers. I'd say you would be getting his best if his numbers were trending upwards, in which case you might expect a big jump up to the elite level. Jackson seems to be just a steady level of inconsistency. Is he suddenly going to find the plate at 29? That seems to me to be the thing that holds him back.

Yeah, I don't know, but it seems to be a good gamble. If he does, you have an ace type guy. That's the issue with Floyd too. When he's got command of his curve ball he's like Verlander. So far that only occurs about a third of the time. But I would bet there will be a year where he's able to locate that curve in almost every start. Then Frank will be saying, "Why didn't he do that for us?"

As John Feinstein just pointed out (sports minute), Jackson was under .500 on a team that won 98 games last year.

He is on his 8th team in 11 years. How does Edwin explain this: "I think everybody likes me," he said.

One argument would be if no one thought he was good, he wouldn't have been traded to a contender every year at the deadline. Of course, you could argue if he was really that good, he wouldn't be traded at all.

Well, usually when a guy is moved so much there is some kind of peronal problem with him. But I've never heard any teammate or manager ever say a bad word about Jackson.

Or they just don't live up to their potential. Like Javy Vazquez.

True, at some point when a guy isn't what you think he could be, frustration with him can set in and it's easy to lose sight of the fact that what he is is still pretty damn good. That's when you either, a) try to replace him by paying a guy no better more money, or b) fantasize that some prospect will one day be as good as he is even though the odds are stacked heavily against it.

Exactly what I don't like about this whole setup. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Theo basically follow this approach in Boston with free agents?
