Like many, I endorse the idea of cutting ties with Urlacher and allowing him to sign elsewhere. Hester is under contract and has a higher cap hit if he's cut than if he's brought back. So I would bring him back for training camp and the pre-season. If he seems like he does well under the new coach (as a return guy ONLY), then it makes sense to keep him. But if he continues to struggle as a return guy, cutting him prior to the season makes sense. I would never extend Cutler, because of his poor play as well as his history of concussions. I let him play out his contract and then use the franchise tag on him should he prove himself worthy of retention in the system installed under the new coach. He can be franchised up to 3 times and he they should be able to draft/develop another guy in that time. Julius Peppers has is due over 16 million in 2013. He's still a good player when healthy. But there is no doubt that he's overpaid. That said, without him, the defense would take a step back. Plus, the cap hit they would take if they cut him would be big. I think I would keep him, unless they intend to try to really rebuild and trade Cutler and truely scrap it. I don't see that happening.

I'd let Urlacher go. I'd keep Hester as a PR/KR guy. The OL needs a dramatic overhaul. Peppers needs to stay & Forte should be kept, so we can see what he can do w/ a younger, hopefully better line.

I thought with football players the cap hit is really nothing when you cut them in the last year or two?

That's usually the case (I wouldn't quite say "really nothing" though) because there are fewer years that are accelerated for the bonus. Plus player's base salaries are usually back-loaded, so you save money by getting out of that.

The Chicago Bears have terminated the contract of wide receiver Johnny Knox, the team said Tuesday.

Knox suffered a severe back injury in a game against the Seattle Seahawks late in the 2011 season and hasn't played since.

In three seasons (2009-11) with the Bears, Knox had 133 receptions for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Details to come.

I hope he retires to protect his health.

Well at least we don't have to hear callers talk about him anymore.
