This is funny, because Jed Hoyer, Rick Hahn, and Gar Forman are all GMs in name only, glorified underlings for their respective bosses, who want final say on [sport] operations but can't be arsed to perform the daily rigors of general management anymore. If you want to get creative and conspiratorial, you could argue that Stan Bowman gets his marching orders from Scotty Bowman (but not John McDonough). Not to derail the thread but Here was my problem with the hiring of Emery in the 1st place: he worked for the Bears for 6 years. Already knew his bosses and how things work with the Bears. Would have been great to get a completely fresh set of eyes. This was the organization who had to hire a search firm to come up with Angelo.

I don't give a shit if he can win a press conference.......He better nail it with this coaching pick.

Nor do I care who he interviews, only who he hires.

What makes Shanny part 2 and Roman better hires than McCoy?

I have reservations about both, but both have demonstrated legitimate creativity in a league that stifles it. McCoy was unwilling to to do the same in similar circumstances.
Every moment spent interviewing Marc Trestman is a moment he could be spending not interviewing Marc Trestman.

I think those are both concerns with regards to McCoy and Shanahan, though less so with Shanahan. But Manning is his own OC, and Denver really changed very little from what Indy was running. I don't trust he was doing much. The other years with McCoy were 1.) McDaniels, who ran the offense there, and 2) the Tebow year, which I think was dreadfully handled by the coaching staff there.

In all seriousness, if there's anything to be devined from the coaches that have been floated as interviewees, it's that the Bears aren't going to take any chances. It's also a sign, I think, that Cutler is getting an extension, and they're going to try to putter along for at least one more season with the roster looking as-is. I'm starting to expect to see Urlacher and Peppers back, whereas I wasn't before. I could of course be wrong.

Except that he doesn't even give a good press conference. His most recent venture was a cliche-ridden mess that became incoherent and contradictory when it touched on the offensive line, a pretty important area for the Bears to improve, I'd say.

The reason why so many at the Score are so confident in Emery's abilities as a GM frankly eludes me. His first draft looks poor, although we'll have to wait and see to know for sure. And his free agent signings were pretty bad. Plus he has too much money committed at the running back position. On the other hand, the Marshall trade looks good, although the Bears desperately need draft picks.

Most of the NFL guys he's interviewing are already under contract as offensive coordinators. Emery can't hire them unless he is offering them a promotion to head coach. Your theory doesn't make sense.

That's a good question, actually. The way I understand the NFL rules are that since Emery got permission to interview all of these guys for a head coaching position, he can only hire them as head coaches--that is, unless their current teams give them permission to take a coordinator's job elsewhere.
