This is pretty cool. Unfortunately, there's the whole problem that when people on the autism spectrum find success, there are too many stupid people who will say "well then nothing is wrong with you."

You make a good point. It sounds like she had to work really hard to get to the point she is at. But to have
that kind of confidence and compete in those pageants says a lot. I have a hard time getting up and speaking
in department meetings and that is less than 20 people.

It's weird. I am on the autism spectrum and can--and do!--speak in public/on camera/into a microphone effortlessly. It's all the everyday talking where I mumble and look at my feet and avoid dins. Brains make no sense.

I used to be really bad with that, but for me it was more of a social phobia. I liked addressing audiences, but intimate conversation with people scared the shit out of me so I avoided it for a long time.

Could it be that one-on-one conversations are more engaging than talking to a group? You talk to one person, they are looking at you, focusing on you. A group might seem like a bunch of "distant heads", some sneezing, some yawning, many texting. You're not looking any one person in the eyes, connecting w/ them.

It's not so much a preference for one being more engaging than the other so much as I just can't process a ton of stimuli at one time like some people can. I had to meet someone at a restaurant a few weeks ago for an interview and I couldn't speak eloquently between the noise of the place, placing an order, all that jazz. It's why I hate to drive with passengers; I don't want to take anyone down with me.

I don't believe this women is autism I live with autism every day my daugater. People want to all way put something extra in to a persons diagnoses just to make people feel better a bout there child. I don't believe it.

This is what I'm talking about. I feel for people who are raising children on the lower end of the spectrum; I really do. But it's a continuum, and even though people may have higher functioning in other respects, they still have similar challenges and still bring challenges upon their families. This is why the community, such as it is, will never have any significant lobbying power. It's too eager to eat itself.

It isn't all a beauty contest. They have interviews and other talents. The prettiest woman rarely wins. I thought it was
