Well, there aren't many guys who throw as hard as Wood did and have a couple plus plus off-speed pitches to go along with that, including a curveball that might have made Bert Blyleven jealous. But I'm sure being a Cub made him more high profile.

Jose Contreras did more from mid-'05 through '06 than Wood did in his whole career and he's a forgotten guy.

Not by me. In this day and age, I don't know if we will ever see as dominant a stretch for a calender year by a SP again.

I don't think its crazy. I'm sure pitchers make tweaks to their delivery in the off-season. The question is, if he did lose some action on his pitches and learned to mix up his pitches like a dominating pitcher does, would he have been able to pitch for longer and won more games? Secondary to this, he never really learned how to avoid that one inning of being shelled early on.

It is crazy.

I don't consider Floyd just a thrower. His stuff is good but not good like Wood's was at his best. Wood didn't need to think too much. He could get you out with whatever he wanted to throw. A man cannot hit what a man cannot see. Floyd has a plan out there. His only problem is consistent location of his curveball.

What you saw with Contreras in '06 was just a little taste of the guy he really was. He was close to 40 at the time and well past his prime. You never saw his best in the big leagues. If he had played his entire career in the majors he'd be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
