While we still don't know who Bears' GM Phil Emery is planning to give second interviews to in the Bears' ongoing search for their next head coach, we know where Notre Dame HC Brian Kelly isn't, and that's the Philadelphia Eagles.

I have a feeling that the following column Bernstein wrote might be a prime topic of conversation following the daily transition with Mac & Spiegs, back on today following a 1-day break due to meetings those guys couldn't get out of.

As far as Bernstein's concerned, it's time we "Stop Believing Coaches". You'll find the link here:

This isn't really timely on the heels of Brian Kelly actually not bailing on a job for once, because this time he said something and meant it. Also, Chip Kelly said he'd stay at Oregon and he did. And Nick Saban is probably staying at Alabama. Maybe we're simultaneously entering The Era Of The NFL College Coach and The Era Of The College Coach Who Stays Put At A Good Job. But still, remain ever vigilant, just in case.

And who is the target audience here? Any sports fan knows college coaches are a bunch of duplicitous snakes. Sitting on flight trackers to see who's interviewing where has become a part of internet college sports fandom. Except for maybe like the starriest of the starry-eyed Notre Dame doofuses, no one believes these fuckers for a minute. I don't think the Naturally Superior Athletes down in the swamps of central Florida are gonna be like "man, I believed everything you told me about always being there for me till I read popular Chicago radio host Dan Bernstein's column about how I can't trust you. Now I don't."

Finally, there's the whole problem that even though college coaches being duplicitous snakes is accepted, that shouldn't make it acceptable. Why are we blaming fans for getting their hopes up that their program might get good and stay good, or Naturally Superior Athletes for putting trust into someone who sought them out to attend a university they'd otherwise have no business attending? Why can't we say that these toilet-paper contracts coaches sign are kind of ridiculous, that lives and prospective careers get derailed by sudden coaching changes, and that as regrettable as the status quo is, maybe it ought to be better for all parties involved -- other than the guys who get to flit away to the SEC and get their $5,000,000 to Matter So Much?

So to summarize:
1. You're an idiot if you thought Brian Kelly would stay.
2. Of course, he did stay.
3. But still, he might not have.
4. So shame on you for thinking he wouldn't leave, given the opportunity.
5. Loyalty is not to be admired; that's just failing to Monetize Everything.
6. Which is totally awesome.
7. But he should still leave you in the lurch if he can because you'd be mad if he lost games.
8. Coaches matter so much.

I may be confusing this Dan Bernstein with another Dan Bernstein, but isn't this the same guy that hates Coach K for what he says? Is this the same Dan Bernstein that hates how coaches use religion for their benefit? Is this the same Dan Bernstein that dislikes how coaches talk about graduation rates and raising fine young men and being mentors to them?

It has to be a different one. That other Dan Bernstein would never, ever write an article that we need to stop believing coaches.

Bernstein has stopped trying. Now he just trolls everybody.

He's a shell of his former self.

The only coaches that can be believed are professional basketball coaches. They are brutally honest. Especially when you get them alone in a dark bar in Rapid City or Wichita Falls.

This is just the latest case of phony, convenient indignation over what too many still perceive as a violation of commitment or lack of loyalty, when such is not the case. If there was any expectation of an old-fashioned handshake and one’s good word sealing a deal to stay forever at Wherever State, there would be no need for the teams of expensive lawyers designing complicated contracts that specifically anticipate the end for both parties.

Any loyalty need only be to that document.

Coaches can leave whenever they want as long as they have Really Smart Guys With Law Degrees there to shepherd them through the process. This is what you get for potentially going on a message board to complain about a play he called.

Don't forget, college athletics has given us a new word: "de-commit".

Just like the Olympics gave us a new definition of the word "amateur". Or of (good  ) "civic leaders" on bid city bidding/organizing committees.

I wonder why he isn't as skeptical about the words of Phil Emery?

Because his eerily similar over the top embrace of the "Great Theo Epstein" and his plan is still accurately quote-able, even by the "meatheads"

And God forbid the meatheads call him out as a hypocrite, correctly hanging him with his own words.

Shouldn't Dan be rooting for the Patriots rather than the "doing things the right way" 49ers? The Patriots are the best team and Dan loves seeing the best team win. Not quite sure what he's so torn over, the choice is easy.
