The new rules made him ineffective (could have just been Hester) and he was never able to adjust (sounds like a problem most Bears coaches have). I thought the ST was no longer a strength last year.

Well, we've lost a damn good defensive coach (Lovie) and a great special teams coach. All those happy about Lovie being gone better hope that the new Offensive minded coach can do enough on that side of the ball to overcome a drop-off in the other facets. And for any one that doesn't like Lovie's defensive system, we all know that turnovers are one of the biggest key to winning football games. I believe he was the best at preaching that.

There is a kernal of truth to this but I think you are far overstating things. I believe they have been in the top 10 in the league in ST every year he has been here. His ST flipping field position on teams was a key to Lovie's success up until last year. He made guys like Ayanbejo, Graham and Gould wealthy beyond what their talents would suggest. I agree that this was a down year but they took Graham from him, Devin and Podlesh suddenly sucked and Gould got hurt...and he still had a top 10 ST.

I don't understand this with respect to Gould. Are you saying he coached him to be one of the most accurate kickers in history? I honestly don't know how much actual placekicking skill is imparted by the ST coach -- I thought they were more focused on schemes. And placekickers don't need to know ANY schemes outside of trick plays, right?

A great long snapper and holder help out the kicker a lot. I can't remember the last time the Bears fumbled up FG/Extra point snap.

All of Gould's misses were actually called for by Toub. He's that good of a coach.

Gould was such a great kicker coming out of college that he was working construction when they called him. I think the true indication of Toub's work is that Gould went from a noodle leg who was accurate from within 35 but could not even be considered beyond 40 into a guy who regularly hits beyond 50 and was putting balls out of the endzone on kick offs even before the institution of the new rules.

The Bears were 9th in the league this year on ST and you don't consider it a strength, that's how damn good Toub has been the previous 7 years or whatever it is. I don't think it's a HUGE loss, but I think it's clearly a loss for the Bears.

a special teams coach was what really carried this team? what the fuck?

i have this brand new idea. its a shocking revelation. its about the players. they sort of do things. like win games. coaches just hold the shit together. lovie did that about 70% of the time. we need someone who does it 100% of the time. toub is a special teams coach. its the easiest of the 3 legs to worry about. dont worry about it. focus on who emery puts on the field, because that is where we win or lose.

Safe to say Toub was at least a very good ST coach, but I wonder on ST how much is the ST coaching vs the head coach allocating the time to practicing special teams? Hester being a #1 WR on paper at some point, was Lovie saying we need to get this guy involved in the offense, or did he still give 33% of his time to ST? And if so, how much of the results of a good ST is being allowed to practice it vs your standard position (for those that aren't just primarily ST.)

At the end of the day, we can really only judge some of these assistant coaches by what happens on the field, even though there are other influences at play. And if you judge it that way, you have to think Toub knows a little bit about what he's doing. I guess we'll see what happens in KC... out of the three phases of the game, I think ST is probably the easiest to dramatically change in a short period of time.

Are Bears fans really bitching & moaning about losing a ST coach? Really? Come on...ST coaches are a dime a dozen. ST is where coaches who cant coach O or D end up. It isn't like Toub had some top secret ST coaching techniques that no one else could figure out. Losing a ST coach doesn't matter.
Toub should pay Hester royalties.

A lot of otherwise nondescript players made the pro bowl under Toub. His work was critical under Lovie's conservative style of coaching when one or two first downs put them in field goal position.

There is no gnashing of teeth but when if Emery's standard is to find excellence, he certainly missed it right under his nose.

Toub wanted to move on. He wants to be a head coach. Nine years here and he wasn't getting any closer to that goal. The Bears could have been assholes and forced him to stay for another year, but that's not the right thing to do.

He just said on the radio he wanted to move on to a new experience. Said no matter who the new Bears coach was, he wanted a change of scenery. Sounded sincere. Who knows?

i think it was partly because he wasnt promoted, and also because he got offered more money. no reason to max out on your st coach though. you think the patriots really care if their special teams hold the opposition behind their own 20 or not? hardly. their offense can score from anywhere.
