Every winning team has luck on their side. Talent doesn't do it alone (see: Peyton Manning).

They were comfortably the best team in the NFC despite the handicap of Rex Grossman as quarterback, and the second best player on their defense was injured for the playoffs. Morgan Freeman eats cotton candy, etc.

On yesterday's B&B show, Buffone mentioned that the CFL uses a 20-second play clock. I like that. Hopefully Trestman will play a high-tempo offense that will keep defenses off balance.

I've also read that Trestman has a huge playbook and has been known to run more than 175 different plays in a season. His creativity as an offensive mind is intriguing, but I hope he is able to establish a few staple plays that the team will be able to rely upon when they need 5 yards for a first down. Martz had a few pet plays that consistently worked for the Bears, but the offense under Turner and Tice never reached that level of proficiency.

Well it's a 20 second playclock after they spot the ball. So while a bit faster, it's not crazy or anything. Nice for those long plays though where the lazy asses can't get down field in time to run the next play in time though.

Lovie used to go by a 50 second play clock

Bears did win their first game in the playoffs that year in overtime against the Seahawks.

And that was despite Lovie calling a timeout with 2 seconds left that gave Seattle another chance at getting the win.

Then they trounced the Saints.

The Bears were without question the defacto cream of the class in the NFC in 2006. As I said you can get on Lovie for a lot of things, but they did not sneak into the #1 seed or the Super Bowl that year.

I heard former Lions QB Scott Mitchell enthusiastically endorse Trestman's coaching prowess on the Mully and Hanley show earlier today. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I have no doubt he's a skilled quarterback coach. That's not a sufficient qualification to be a head coach in the NFL, however.

So how many coaches has he brought down from his CFL team? 3 now?

I actually had the interview on and it was worthless.

Who the fuck cares what bad NFL QB Scott Mitchell thinks about Jim Trestman? How long ago did Scott Mitchell work with him?

The station wide thing, at least that is what it seemed like, of having all of these "Marc Trestman Guys" on to slob his knob was obnoxious.

"Alright, we have a special guest joining us now, let's welcome Jack Jablanksi who helped set up tape for Marc to watch back in his days with the Lions!"
"Hello, Jack, what can you tell us about Marc? How awesome is he?"

I would be interested in hearing someone from the Score interview Tim Brown regarding Trestman's prospects as an NFL head coach.

But...Trestman is a leader of men and has won championships!

That would have been fine about two weeks ago when Brown seemed like a stable person. If you interview him now he is liable to say about some underground conspiracy at Notre Dame during his playing days

The infusion of insanity would just make it better.

Jerry Rice seems to despise Trestman, too. The Score should get him on the phone as well.

CJH had him on last week. Basically, Trestman didn't have Jerry run down the field a whole lot because Rice was working inside the numbers. Which meant fewer long passes and more hits from "the big guys"

Its not hard to see why a proven guy like Rice wouldn't care much for that. Nevertheless, Trestman has had successful offenses pretty much everywhere he's been.

Thanks for the info. Did Rice comment on Trestman's ability as a "leader of men?"

I only caught the last half or third of the interview, and they didn't really talk about that. He did say that Trestman was a pretty good offensive mind and that they worked together in Oakland after SF and got back to the Super Bowl, mainly because of their offense.

Whether or not he can lead and/or coach defense remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that the guy should vastly improve the Bears offense.

I hope for the best. They can stop the talk about 2 Grey Cup wins though. The league has 8 teams.

They just hired a coach that Purdue fired for being bad. That's pretty bad.

Here's some data for the Fire Trestman! file.

Contrary to Emery's description of the Bears' new head coach, Trestman did not consistently achieve excellence as an NFL offensive coordinator. Here's his record (far right column is NFL points ranking, second from right is yards):

1989 CLE 16th 14th
1995 SFO 2nd 1st
1996 SFO 6th 3rd
1998 ARI 13th 15th
1999 ARI 29th 30th
2000 ARI 24th 29th
2002 OAK 1st 2nd
2003 OAK 25th 26th

Lots of mediocre to horrible years there for Air Canada.

Just to play devil's advocate.

14th with the Browns is pretty good. The 9ers years are good. He got something out of Plummer and saw Gannon become an mvp before the Raiders stopped trying.

My main issue is he looks like Grobber with slicked hair

Right, I'm not saying he didn't have some good years, just that he wasn't "consistently excellent," as Emery contended.

Plus the "championships" that Emery touted on behalf of Trestman came in an eight-team league.

He sure is bringing a lot of coaches over from the Montreal Alouettes, isn't he. I don't know about that.
