There are rumblings & grumblings that another recent World Series MVP will soon call it a career. That would be Hideki Matsui. Seems hard to believe, Matsui was the World Series MVP of the Yankees' last World Series title team in 2009.

Free-agent Lance Berkman and the Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year deal Saturday, reports MLB.com.

The deal also comes with a vesting option for 2014 and Berkman will receive a $10 million salary plus a $1 million buyout this season.

Berkman, 36, had two surgeries on his right knee last season, forcing him to play only 32 games with the St. Louis Cardinals. Berkman hit .259 in 81 at-bats with two homers and seven RBIs.

The Mariners offered one of Danny Hultzen, James Paxton or Taijuan Walker, plus Nick Franklin, Charlie Furbush and Stephen Pryor to the Diamondbacks for Justin Upton.

Amazingly Upton is only 25 years old and is under team control for another 3 years but holy crap that is a monster package of players. The D'bags have to be PISSED that Upton didn't accept the trade.

How could he have rejected it, he doesn't have enough time in yet? What am I missing?

When they signed him to an extension they gave him a limited no trade clause to four teams. Seattle is one of those teams.

Yeah, they are preseason #1. Also, have 3 preseason all-americans. I can't wait, I am so ready for baseball. Hawg Jr. has been hitting but we started ramping up his workouts this week.

One of their pitchers may be chosen by the Cubs this next draft with the #2 pick.

Ryan Stanek is his name and he is a stud.

Who has them pre-season #1? I figured Stanford would be #1. Vandy is going to be real good too.

3 All-Americans: Stanek, Ficociello and ???

Fairly certain it was Baseball America, and the closer I can't think of his name right now.

BA hasn't done their top 25 yet. They were ranked #1 by Collegiate Baseball. That's cool.

Colby Suggs. Do you think he'll be the closer or are they going to make him the Saturday starter?

I think they will leave him in the closer role, he can pitch multiple innings and was brilliant down the stretch last year. He throws gas!!

You're right they should leave Suggs as the closer. They have Astin, Fant and Moore to fight it out for the last two weekend spots and maybe one of the kids will step up and grab one of those spots. I'm looking forward to Ficociello having a breakout season. Now that Reynolds is gone maybe he can play a litte third base.

It's official: Scott Boras is a wizard...

Source: Rafael Soriano agrees to two-year, $28M deal with Nationals. Deal contains vesting option for third year.

Rafael Soriano’s $14 million option will vest with 120 games finished over the next two seasons.

The Nats also lose their 1st round pick (#29). That's a hell of a bullpen with Soriano, Storen, Rodriguez and Clippard.

That also tells you that Mariano Rivera isn't about to call it a career...yet.

That, in addition to dozens of news stories quoting Mariano Rivera's stated intention to return in 2013.

Red Sox designate Chris Carpenter for assignment.

They really fleeced poor Theo in that deal.

Phillies signed OF Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

This is an odd fit. Young will fight for playing time with John Mayberry, Dominick Brown and Darin Ruf. The fact that he's a dreadful outfielder doesn't help his cause.

BORAS TEAM UNITE!!! All of a sudden, there are eight suitors for Michael Bourn. He really has these national beat writers as lapdog promotion interns.
