So for some reason I suddenly got the urge to play some Axis and Allies and I went digging through my old CDs to see if I could find it. Looks like it won't play properly on Vista, but I'm trying another version right now.

Anyways, wondering what some of the other board members like(d) to play.

I liked one of the versions of Life that had Skunk Money on there... I lost the CD though.

Scrabble is good on the computer because the program has a built-in dictionary and you don't have to worry about losing pieces. I think Chess is great on the computer too. I'm not proud of how many hours I wasted on Yahoo Games playing that against real people.

I always thought it similar to Risk-- would make a good computer conversion, if for no other reason than not having to deal with all those odd little pieces.

When I was in elementary school they had Risk in the computer lab. That, along w/ Oregon Trail, Paperboy, Gauntlet, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego, Clam Bake (Pac-Man rip-off) & Pengo were some of my favorites.

Agreed on Yahoo Chess. Haven't logged in for a couple years but from around 05-08 or so I must've played at least 1000 games on there.

Can't say I dug too much into it...found an open sourced software that does the trick for now.

Gonna see if I can set something up with the pops tomorrow to start playing this again.

The first computer version - the one I'm trying to play - is the goods. Same gameplay as the board game, with all the bells in whitsles that you could expect from a late nineties PC-CDROM release (grainy video cutscenes just for the hell of it come to mind).

The second computer version released a few years later...that was a bit weird. Had the same board layout from what I remember, but when you went into battles, you went into an RTS mode...so yeah, it wasn't Axis and Allies at all.

I have both but I'm not sure I even want to install the second one again after thinking about it.

Speaking of Risk, that also had a really sweet PC version in the late nineties. The classic game was there, but it was "Ultimate Risk" that I really enjoyed.

Instead of rolling dice, you used different methods of attack and defense and then the computer simulated the battle. Instead of just soldiers, there were also the addition of generals, forts, capitals. There were also pesky rebels, who always seemed to fuck my plans up.

I wasted away many a days playing that game, especially the various scenarios for Revlutionary War - era North America and Napoleanic era Europe.

Not a board game but still a game, Yahtzee. Still love to play it.

as a wargamer and old Gronard.
I play a lot of stuff mostly Avalon Hill(Old not the new crap)
GDW( Some fracking great old school games esp Invasion Earth and Imperium)
SPInumber crunching to the max

Some of my all time favorites are
Fortress Europa,Car Wars,Ogre/GEV,Third World War,B17,Battletech, Kingmaker,Panzer Leader,Squad Leader,Star Fleet Battles(The most number crunching game ever),Starfire

Then you got the miniature rules and games I play:Johnny Reb(ACW) Flames of War(15mm WW2),Battlestar Galactica,and just starting Old West and Gladiators. Will be runnign games at the local game shop and at conventions

Knew some guys that were really into Stratomatic baseball. This would have been '92. I was the hugest of Barry Bonds fan at the time. I always thought he could hit 40 homers for 20 years and break Hank Aaron's record. But that's not why I called.

On Bonds' stratomatic card, rolling a 6 with a 4 or 5 total on the other two dice resulted in a home run. I was able to do this during his at-bats with regular consistency. Yes, were were huge nerds without girlfriends, and kept stats for our games and seasons. Barry's numbers were off the charts good. I was very proud of that at 14-15 years old.

Too bad Stratomatic was just a gateway dicegame for these guys to try and rope me into D&D. I watched them do a guild quest or whatever stupid shit they were doing with the graph paper one night. Of course they wanted me to join in on their "adventure". I said I would only do it if I could make my character Barry Bonds. Not a mage or palladin or arctic killer gnome, but Barry freakin' Bonds. 100% human, zero fucking magic, charm or charisma maxed out, his only weapon a Louisville Slugger.

These dorks had enough nerve to tell me that was a bad idea and not the spirit of the game. I told them there shit was stupid and never had another game night with them again. The end.

JORR will have this same story but it will be different in two ways: 1. It will be 1978 in his story. 2. One of the D&D members would be one of the guys from Blood, Sweat, and Tears. I really enjoy all the JORR stories.
