Video: Miami woman flips off judge, gets 30 days in jail

Updated: February 6, 2013 8:57AM

MIAMI — A Miami woman was jailed on contempt charges after flipping off a judge during a drug possession hearing.

Miami television station NBC 6 reports 18-year-old Penelope Soto laughed Monday when Circuit Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat asked how much her jewelry was worth as he inquired about her financial assets.

The judge told Soto “we’re not in a club, be serious about it.” Soto said she was being serious.

He set Soto’s bond at $5,000 and said, “bye-bye.” Soto laughed again and replied, “Adios.” He summoned her back to the podium and reset bond at $10,000.

Soto asked, “Are you serious?” The judge replied, “I am serious. Adios.”

Soto flipped him off and blurted an expletive as she walked away.

The judge then sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

In court? Shut the fuck up, take care of your business and get the fuck out.

It's as much about justice and the law as it is about money and revenue, maybe even more.

This question didn't need to be asked by the judge, and has zero to do with the woman's case.

The judge told Soto “we’re not in a club, be serious about it.” Soto said she was being serious.
Another innappropriate comment.

He set Soto’s bond at $5,000 and said, “bye-bye.”
Now he's just being a dick.

Soto laughed again and replied, “Adios.” He summoned her back to the podium and reset bond at $10,000.
Annother dick move.

Soto asked, “Are you serious?” The judge replied, “I am serious. Adios.”
Someone should kick this guy in the nuts by this point.

Soto flipped him off and blurted an expletive as she walked away.
Ok, this is inappropriate, but everything that led up to it would anger any regular person.

I don't get the hilarious joke part, but I agree this judge sounds like a total prick.

I believe judges are supposed to take ability to pay into account in bond hearings. This is what got George Zimmerman in trouble(well, besides the whole senseless murder of someone not doing anything wrong thing) when he lied about it.

The judge was kind of a jerk, but you can't take it to the level she did.

This.

Don't worry about firing back at the judge, getting cute or doing anything related.

Take care of your business and get the fuck up. If the judge is a prick or says, "bye-bye", well, you keep your mouth shut and get out. He's the fucking judge, he may be an asshole, he may just be having a bad day having to hear the cases of a bunch of loser idiots, he may be both and it doesn't matter.

Take care of your business and get out because the machine wants your money.

The Judge inquired about her jewelry because it is relevant as to whether she can afford an Attorney, versus having the Public Defender appointed.

Part of the initial line of questioning was did she have any assets, car, home, jewelry. She promptly got a little cheeky describing all of the jewelry she had and how it was worth a lot of money. She was incapable of putting a value to it, and looked like she was about to pass out trying.

She really made an ass of herself throughout. My guess is she was high, she will sober up and as Seacrest mentioned be out by Friday.

Do you have to qualify to use a public defender, or can anyone just ask to have one?

I know it's not the best option, but I didn't know if you are required to show you can't afford an actual attorney before getting to use a public defender.

Absolutely, if you have sufficient assets, you do not qualify.

Honestly, I don't care what the judge did at that point and time. I have never needed to be in front of a judge, but you can best believe my answers would be yes sir or no sir. If I had a problem with the judge I would then relay that to the attorney appointed to me or the one I got on my own. To flip off of a judge is not good on any level.

Here is the point. I appear frequently before Judges who I consider to be borderline morons. Frankly, some of them are well connected doofuses who happen to have the right friends. Internally, I have very little respect for these idiots, as my legal intellect is a mountain compared to their molehill.

Yet, when I appear before them, I always am polite. I say "Yes, Sir," or "Yes, Your Honor." One must respect the position, if not the Judge himself.

I think this lady's problem is that she seemed very high on drugs.

KS, do you have information for those that have to deal with judges?
