I understand the first part, but aren't you inconveniencing yourself by purposely standing in a line vs. being on your way?

But to be clear, the poor guy is NOT the villian.

Not sure all of us realize that.

No. What do I look like? Fuckin' Mike Holiday over here? I don't do oil changes or hysterectomies and I damn sure don't bag groceries.

It requires less mental effort to thumb one's nose at those less fortunate, than it is to try to identify with them.

WTF? I'll ignore the nonsensical hysterectomy comment, but oil changes are a messy job and I would imagine can be done by someone else much more efficiently than you. Standing in line vs. being on your way shows little regard for your own time.

It's just a saying we had at a hone improvement company where I worked. It just means there are certain things we don't do. I wasn't claiming to be a gynecologist.

We all have blame. It's easy to blame Bill Gates for the problems but much of the problems in our society comes from the decisions being made by the non-rich. Bill Gates isn't the reason Americans are fat and stupid.

The situation I described was going to be much more than two minutes. There were 8 people in each line + the inevitable coupons/price checks/not having shit together.

Im definitely not thinking of Bill Gates. He's "one of the good ones"

A big portion of the blame goes in and around corporations and how we've let them become as important as the actual government.

Whatever the time would have been, principle trumps it for JORR

Im sure you have some things you simply wont do, even if they're convenient, right?

Unless JORR is masochistically standing in line somewhere, I'm sure he can speak for himself. I'll give him an opportunity to clarify beyond the oil change example.

The upper class: keeps all of the money, pays none of the taxes. The middle class: pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there...just to scare the shit out of the middle class.

Yes, JORR can speak for himself and has already, like three times, but you dont like his answer so you keep asking.

I was trying to end this road to nowhere. Sorry.

The road to nowhere is clearly the Manti thread.

I simply don't understand where he's coming from with the part about being inconvenienced. The oil change part didn't help matters. Care to explain the principle behind this?

I find it inconvenient to do work that used to be someone's full-time job for free at the behest of a conglomerate. That isn't outlandish, is it? Therein lies the principle.

It's similar to allowing jackbooted government thugs to search you house because you have nothing to hide. You may find letting them in and getting it over with the most convenient path, in my world, surrendering my rights is decidedly inconvenient.

CVS wants me to work for free on their behalf. I will not do it to save two minutes or two hours. If it's two minutes, I'll wait. If it's two hours, I'll go to Nathan Pharmacy.

You're right he can answer

I just think there are many things we don't do out of principle that would be convenient this is just a unique example

Yeah, I know. He did in the post right above yours. That's was all I was looking for - a clarification of his principle. The oil change example was unclear to me and seems to support the opportunity cost aspect.

JORR and I are from vastly different worlds and I like hearing his perspective on things, whether I agree or not. Since you decided to interject yourself into this part of the discussion (and JORR appeared to have checked out of it), I asked you to explain. And you offered yet another variant of "it's the principle."

Thanks for mutton.

I seriously can't believe somebody would stand in line for 5 or 10 minutes just to have somebody else put their 2 items in a plastic bag because they don't bag out of principal. To me that just seems insane.

No; it's intellectually lazy as fuck. If one doesn't see the several gradient steps between federal searches and bagging a couple boxes of Tucks pads then they probably need to take a week off to examine their lives.

I don't think he was doing an apples for apples analogy there. He was just using the search example as one where someone will not always do the convenient thing to save time.
