I get it.

No; it's intellectually lazy as fuck. If one doesn't see the several gradient steps between federal searches and bagging a couple boxes of Tucks pads then they probably need to take a week off to examine their lives.

I don't think he was doing an apples for apples analogy there. He was just using the search example as one where someone will not always do the convenient thing to save time.

But it's a preposterous comparison on its face, let alone after dwelling on it for a moment. By that logic, I could justify the one-child policy in China with the over-population of Asian Carp in the area; I mean, it's about too many of a species with an Asian lineage, so that's clearly an acceptable comparison, no?

I can understand and agree with that. There are people that drive cross country everyday in stead of fly, for example.

To sit in line for 10 minutes because you don't want to bag the 2 cans of tomato sauce and 1 box of noodles on your own is just mind numbingly stupid IMO.

It's more than just not wanting to bag something. JORR has a problem with the company cutting work staff and not cutting prices at the same time. If the store offered some kind of discount for using self-checkout, I don't think JORR would have a problem with it.

Don - your comparison right there was intellectually lazy as fuck. Not only is there no correlation, but you're talking about a governmental policy vs one man's decision on how to live his life that isn't adversely affecting anyone, except for possibly annoying people who like to tell other people how to live.

That's it exactly. And it's a store blackmailing its customers. You can do the work yourself or wait all day. Fuck that. I'll shop elsewhere.

Don didn't like my analogy. How about CVS Tom Sawyer has convinced you to pay him for the joy of bagging groceries.

Yeah, I know. He did in the post right above yours. That's was all I was looking for - a clarification of his principle. The oil change example was unclear to me and seems to support the opportunity cost aspect.

JORR and I are from vastly different worlds and I like hearing his perspective on things, whether I agree or not. Since you decided to interject yourself into this part of the discussion (and JORR appeared to have checked out of it), I asked you to explain. And you offered yet another variant of "it's the principle."

Thanks for mutton.

Furious-

I don't want you to get too caught up on the oil changes. That was just me being glib. I was handling the architectural plans for a home improvement company. The types of projects we did were very specific, i.e., basements and sunrooms. But sometimes a salesman would tell a customer anything to close a deal. (That's how I once ended up digging a hole for a fucking window well. But that's another story.) When some douchebag brought back some crazy shit, our standard reply in the office was, "We don't do oil changes or hysterectomies."

But since you keep mentioning the oil changes... How about if an oil change place had six bays and the only staffed one of them and advised you you could change your own oil in one of the other five bays immediately or wait an hour for the attendant to do it. And by the way, either way, the price is still $39.95. That's how I feel about bagging my own shit.

Anybody who pays more than about $25 for a standard oil change is a moron.

It costs about 10 dollars to do it yourself.

I call in advance for an oil change and I'm sure as shit not qualified to do it nor am I dressed for it. And for a $40 dollar oil change, they are doing/inspecting things that I am in no way qualified to do myself.

The "Anybody who _____ is a ______" proclamations are about as meaningless as it gets in terms of actual contribution to a discussion.

It's at least $20 to buy an oil filter, and 5 quarts of oil.

yeah I think it has been awhile since rpb has bought stuff to change your own oil. It is no longer any cheaper to do it yourself.

I think you should, but I'm not certain. That's why I don't do it myself. And I'm just as uncertain as to whether the tomatoes go on top of the pound cake or vice versa.
