The most frightening part of this whole episode is not this maniac, but the thousands upon thousands of people that consider Dorner a hero.

It just shows that the morals of this country are going right down the toilet.

The number of incidents of pure violence and pure evil are increasing at an alarming rate.

People are just snapping with unprecedented frequency, and it's only going to get worse.

Any numbers to shed a wee bit more light on that proclamation?

I suppose the numbers are out there. But just a few examples obviously are:
The temple shooting in Milwaukee
The spa shooting in Milwaukee
The theater shooting in Aurora, CO
Sandy Hook
it just goes on and on and on.

Do you recall this kind of rampage as you were growing up? Or even 5 to 10 years ago?

Violent crime is down.

Honestly I wouldn't know. The amount of national media out there now, is totally different than when I grew up. We may have never known other things that were going on, but there was Oklahoma City and the Atlanta Olympic bombing.

And massacres are way, way up?

I don't know, are they?

Agree with Hawg here. The thing that is different is the amount of information/media that we get exposed to now.

Mr. Simpson, how do you respond to the charges that petty vandalism such as graffiti is down eighty percent, while heavy sack beatings are up a shocking nine hundred percent?

Aw, you can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forty percent of all people know that.

In short, we've had a larger number than average the past 12 months or so, but with how small the numbers are it often varies greatly.

We are much less violent as a society today compared to where we were in the 80s and 90s.

I'm entertained two articles within a week of each other are titled "2012 is tragic, but mass shootings not increasing, experts say" and "Mass Murder Rate Still Rising, Experts Say "

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/1 ... 02590.html

Quote:
Shooting sprees are on the rise and probably won't be subsiding any time soon.

"There's clearly been a major upswing," criminologist Gary LaFree of the University of Maryland told The Huffington Post on Friday.

How much of an increase is subject to debate. According to FBI statistics, the trend is inching upward. People killed in clusters of four or more averaged 163 annually between 2006 and 2008, just two more than back in the 1980s.

"Homicide trends don't look like EKGs," said LaFree, who is also director of the National Center for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. "They go up for a while and tail off for a while."

But, LaFree added, "What's interesting is that we're getting a specialized strain of violence when other forms are in decline."
