I realize this can be considered insensitive for posting, but its always good to see humans react positively in intense situations like this. Dude near the end took his shirt off to help with what I can only assume is a dude bleeding out from car shrapnel. Pretty fucked up.

The tire was just sitting there like 2 seats away from that guy filming.

I'm surprised there aren't more injuries at these events.

I think a lot more of the posters here after reading the comments to that video.

Serious question, do people sitting there have a real expectation chain link fences can stop debris? Is this a surprise that this happened?

Long before this I thought that when I take my son to his first race we are sitting up in like the last row.

I watched this video at least 20x now. Check out the cameraman is the safety zone. The engine crashes through right where he is filming. A dude in a green jacket runs towards him right after it happens.

There is also a large guy with glasses you see filming, the tire had to be a chair or two to his left. He didn't see it as he was taking video as well.

Deadspin has a good story.

Good job by deadspin showing the sportcenter clip where the fucking morons at espn open with a story about danica's power failure instead of the horrific crash.

As a yut, I used to go to the old Raceway Park every Saturday because I knew a driver. That was a quarter mile track. I rarely sat up front, and would say the fence isn't going to stop anything.

To ESPN's credit, they didn't just ignore the crash. The quickly mentioned Danica as an aside then said the main focus was the crash. This is Deadspin and people wanting to crap on ESPN because it's trendy to do.

....but this was breaking news with possible crowd injuries and fatalities at the time. No one should give a shit about a car that only lasted 1/3 of the race. She had't been on the track in hours.
