Sports knowledge alone does not make a good host.

Keep him (and his impressions).

If sports knowledge is the primary qualification, then bring back the Grobber.

Hood is better than anybody at MVP with the exception of Mac. Keeping this guy on the bench is absolutely insane. NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA, the guy covers it all. Plus, he's one of the few hosts in this town that actually can run a solo show, and run it well.

Everyone knows how I Feel on this subject. J Hood is one of the better personalities in Chicago that still hasn't been given his proper due. It's time to give this guy a shot and see what happens.

It's just a matter of if ESPN 1000 is allowed to do with the time slot as they wish. I would worry about their corporate wing saying they already have local shows throughout the day. I hope I'm wrong. I'm not against a good national show, and I would be for some national MLB/NFL show (kind of like Sirius Radio's NFL station only in a 3 hour show) in that slot, but that's probably not in the works.

Wait. A host in Chicago that knows and covers college football? I'm sold. The only ones I know of are MJH and it's normally in passing or when they used to have Musberger on.

After taking a quick glance of all show hosts listed on this board, I have to say that I agree. I would rank J Hood #2 on my list of current and potential hosts between the SCR and MVP. I was excited when I found out that J Hood had moved up the dial to 1000, but that's when I thought he would actually be on the air on a regular basis ie 9-12.

Based on the fact that I've endured Salisbury and Rosenbloom, perhaps the worst product in recent sports radio history, and I still listen to this station at all. I think I've earned a chance to hear what I want for a change. [/quote]

Well, I was being sarcastic. On Saturdays, I'm normally watching the games or I'm at a game but that does sound cool. I was more hoping for good college football talk during the week.

Hi J Hood,
This is Boilermaker Rick. I love your show. Do you think Purdue will win the national championship this year? I'll hang up and listen for your answer.

Make it happen ESPN!

I think Hood has paid his dues for his unprofessional conduct in the Telander kerfuffle. Maybe the "business" thinks the same thing. He should get a another shot. However, I like him with a co-host. It keeps him more focused and allows him to ad lib more often. I really enjoyed him and Silvio on Saturdays. What I have heard of him and JD, I also like.
Hood, JD and the Grobber, make it happen.

Why is that ESPN radio is eagerly willing to give anybody with zero or limited radio experience (Sean Salisbury, Tom Waddle, Dan Patrick when he started) an opportunity to host/co-host a regular time slot while others, who have a history of "success" are passed over?
Maybe name recognition gets somebody new to listen once, but a good host gets somebody new to listen consistently.

I agree on both counts, Nas. Hood and Berns were very good. Hood was confident enough to challenge Berns, unlike the resident cadaver. Which made for good radio.

Mike, I'll chalk this "analysis" up to one too many Miller Chills.

Absolutely. Hood was a staple for me in my early sportsradio years. If you are a frustrated baseball fan, Jonathan is your post-game guy. Very good on the Bulls as well. Also, and often overlooked, is that his national coverage is excellent. Most local guys just focus on the Sox, Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. Hood is into just about every major conference for NCAA basketball and football.

That's an overstatement, CSF. Some don't like him, and that's fine, everyone's entitled to their opinion. But, there are plenty of people that don't like Mac, either, and he's widely regarded as the biggest sportsradio name in this town.

I can't speak for everyone, but the reason I'm stirred up about this is simply because there's now an open time slot on MVP. Whether they do the right thing and stay local is another story, but it would be a severe case of mismanagement if they were to overlook this guy once again.

I don't understand why you guys think ESPN radio honchos in Bristol would just give away the afternoon time slot to local hosts. It's already been shown that the value of the time slot to the network is not related directly to the ratings in Chicago or any other individual market. It's about the national ratings and having a nationally branded product. ESPN doesn't own WMVP so that it can give away 3 of the 4 major time slots to local programming. Whatever national program moves into this time slot for the network will have to have the Chicago market included. Very long odds that anything but another mediocre national program fills this slot.

Trying to follow the advice in your sig, Coast. We're working on it. Of course the mother nipple wants to feed us some unprovocative garbage. It's our right as consumers to tell them they don't know what's best for us.

Well if you're going to have a campaign for J Hood, then dammit, have a real campaign.

Campaign strategy #1: If you want to join the J Hood campaign, then change your avatar to a JHood photo.

My guy!

You'll have to work on Good Dolphin, Coast. He is pro-Hood but anti-avatar. Maybe he'll make an exception for the good of Chicago sportsradio.
