Please. You just started a thread last week Dbagging the Sox and they haven't even thrown a meaningful pitch yet. Yes, the goal is to win the World Series, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a season that doesn't end with a WS title.

I've honestly never heard anyone invoke "White Sox Nation". FWIW

"Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports that he’ll get $32.5 million guaranteed over the next five seasons. The deal also includes a pair of club options for 2018 and 2019 which could bring the max value of the deal to $60 million. The extension buys out all three of his arbitration seasons and potentially his first three years of free agency, so it has a chance to be an excellent bargain if he health cooperates.”

That amount of money isn't going to cripple a team. There is a benefit for the team and player as well to not having to ever go through the arbitration process. I don't see the objection to giving a 25 yr pitcher how throws darts a 5 year deal... it's those Zito/Santana like 7+ year deals that can kill a franchise.

All of White Sox Nation could fit in Miller's Pub.

Yep the Giants have only won 2 WS titles with Zito as a SP. Probably would have won 6 if not for the crippling deal. :eye:

I was referring to the actual fans themselves... it's unclear if the person who decided to run with that at Miller's is an actual WS fan.

Unlike Cubbie Nation, the White Sox fanbase thoroughly rejects the label instead of embracing it. That's why they intentionally don't go to many games.

Correct  which is why i typed can... the Giant and pre-Madoff Met are franchises that can afford that type of mistake. I don't even think Zito was in their World Series rotation... nothing like a $20mm mop-up guy :eye:

3 year extension with 2 options, basically. His pre-arb years were under his rookie contract

Cubs fans are sure a A player is a franchise player

Sox fans aren't sure an 25 year old 18 game winner is worth the investment

What Sox fan here has said he is not worth this investment? THere are legit injury concerns for any pitcher, but if he can make 25+ starts a year this seems to be an absolute steal of a deal for the Sox.

My bad, Hank- it is a 5-yr. I don't vet my posts like SHARK

You can see it is pretty comparable to guys with the same range of MLB service time.

Outlier of course is Lincecum... but that was an odd case of a guy winning 2 Cys before hitting arb.

Why are there legit injury concerns? Because some bozo doesn't like his delivery?

If there are legit injury concerns than he isn't worth the investment.

I don't have any concerns with this deal.

The main thing is the club doesn't have these concerns. It seems they have moved beyond that curious time last year when Sale Is Hurt, Sale Isn't hurt, Sale Is The Closer, Sale is in the Rotation Again... all in the span of a few days.

Cooper and Schneider have an impressive track record at this point of consistently keeping pitchers off the DL.

Maybe concern isn't the correct word to use. Worrying about an injury might be the best way to phrase it from a fan's perspective. Injuries can happen to any player, but we've seen many teams get burned by injuries after giving long term deals to pitchers.

I love the deal. The Sox have potentially one of the best pitchers in the AL well under market value for the next 5 years.

I think its a good and fair deal on both sides, Sox get some protection down the line , Sale gets to make a lot of money for 3 years and gets security even if he ruins his arm. DIdnt think it could turn into a Sox fan v Cubs fan sniping fest though.

you know, fittingly i think the legit injury concerns are why sale took a deal under market value (altho how many of these seasons are outside of his arb years?) cuz like, with that funky delivery lord knows what could happen. this way, no matter what happens the guy's got a 30mil nest egg to work with if the baseball thing doesn't work out, not to mention in the short term it'll be spun like he's a non-greedy team-first player who DOESN'T JUST CARE ABOUT MONEY (kind of like the honorable jake peavy taking 2/29 in order to "finish what he started" here in chi cuz he stopped short of pulling a kerry wood and saying he owed the team, which had to thrill kerry's agent back then) and he decided to give the white sox the power to keep him for two individual years @ market value if he continues being the chris sale we saw last year, which is HUGE for them cuz if he has a run of years like last year, the sox are injury-protected for two years without having to go to another extension.

still tho, my first reaction to seeing the news of the extension was "wow, this guy isn't betting on his own durability, which is actually a pretty smart move if he doesn't wanna live like a 10+ millionaire" cuz there's no doubt in my mind that chris sale loves to make it rain while he's poppin bottles at the club.

Sale is the best pitcher to come up through the minor leagues to this town since Prior. I thought the world of Prior and feel the same about Sale. The great thing is, he is the anti Prior in terms of his makeup. Sale pushed the Sox when they tried to send him to the pen while Prior was all to happy to miss a start every time he felt less than 100%.

Sale went from 71 to 192 innings pitched last season. The wear and tear showed during the last month of the season particularly. I will be shocked if Sale does not have a stint on the DL this season as a result of the abuse his arm withstood last year. He will probably begin the season strong, but about 6 weeks or so into the season, I will be looking for a break-down. The risk of losing him IN 4 YEARS, was not one I would have allowed myself to consider so strong, that I sign him now. Perhaps 2-3 years from now, but not now. Allow him to get through the next couple seasons and see if he has any injury issues or not. But to take on this commitment before its necessary, is foolish. If he stays healthy, it's a very good deal for the Sox. But I suspect Sale signed it now, because his arm was already bothering him last season when he was shut down for a start on a couple occassions, and he fears that an injury is a real likely possibility. Bad move, as was the Peavy re-signing. peavy went from 111 innings to 219 innings last season and had spent over a year on the DL in each of the previous 5 seasons. The expectation that he will stay healthy again this season after all the wear he endured in 2012 is also foolish. I see both having problems and being less effective when healthy in 2013.

Did you not say the same thing last year and he still managed to throw nearly 200 innings?

As mentioned in my post, he threw 192 innings, which was an increase of 121 innings over the previous season. The way his performance level fell off towards the end of the season was evidence that he was past the number of innings he should have been asked to pitch last season. He will probably do really well this season early on, as he has had time to recover to some extent. But the wear and tear will catch up with him and I fully expect he will break down. I'm glad you recognize that my position on this matter has been a consistent one though.
