Bob, I think you have some of the best wrestling thoughts on this board, but I think you are way off here. I do not see any way in the world Sting would have "bombed." Sure Sting has not been the best promo guy int he business, especially back then, but he could have easily done as well or better than Warrior back then. And Sting was never close to being a cruiserweight, that is just silly. Why would him being littler than Warrior mattered? Haven't we gotten to the point of realizing that a guys size has pretty much nothing to do with how good he is going to be in the ring?

Vince hasn't.

Vince hasn't.

That is always the fall back position. And sure he has always had a thing for pushing big guys. But let's step back and look at some of his champions since the days of Hogan.

And also realize most of the numbers are on the generous side:

HBK 6'1" 225lbs

Hitman 6'1" 235lbs

Stone Cold 6'2" 250lbs

Jericho 6'0" 225lbs

Edge 6'5" 240lbs

CM Punk 6'2" 220lbs

Cena 6'1" 250lbs

So it is time to put to rest this idea that Vince only pushes big guys. That is simply not the case.

And on top of that Warrior was not that much bigger than Sting. Warrior is listed at 6'2" 275lbs and Sting is listed at 6'2" 250lbs.

I stand by my conclusion that Sting could have done everything Warrior did and did it even better.

I hear ya, that's fair. I should have elaborated quite a bit. First, I took the question in a certain time frame. Warrior's first big deal was his match at Mania 4 in April 88, Sting's was Clash in march 88 so they're good comparisons. Warrior lost the hvyweight title in Jan 91 so my time frame is 3 years 88-90. I base most of my opinion on Vince's size fetish. Both guys were about the same height, but Warrior had at least 25-30 pounds of muscle and was ripped. Warrior was the most built guy in the biz. No comparison between the 2 physically and that's enough to not get a huge push from Vince in 88-89. The argument that Vince pushed smaller guys in the 90's like Bret and HBk just doesn't matter, because it was the 80's. 2 different questions. A guy Sting's size woulda/coulda have been in the IC mix in the late 80's and most all of those guys were workhorses like Steamboat and Macho or true veterens. Sting would have been clueless in the ring with those guys back then so he wouldn't have gotten a huge IC push unless he was a heel like honky. He's nowhere near big enough to be a monster heel and they had hogan so he's worthless as a late 80's wwf babyface in the heavyweight division. Sting benefited from the wcw style and being able to work with a guy like Flair. So basically, he was too green to get over as a babyface at the IC level and was nowhere near big enough to work as a heavyweight in 88-90 wwf. Reverse the roles and there's no way Sting gets to the level where he beats hogan at mania VI. It's not taking anything away from the stinger, its just all about timing and it worked out perfect for both of them. Also throw in the factor that Vince never would have allowed the name Sting. He would have been Sparky McGee or some shit. If Sting goes to WWF, he's a bum, he signs with NWA and he's a 15 time world champ. Warrior goes to wwf and we get crazy rants and a messed up dvd from vince. everyone wins.

In Vince's world, Sting is Tatanka at best.

I neglected the other side of the scenario. IMO, Warrior in NWA would have been Shockmaster / Ding Dongs bad. Kids and fans would have popped for the physique, but he couldn't do the entrance in the tv studio. He'd have to stop after about 12 feet. He never would have gotten into the situation to face Flair at Clash to begin with. Warrior's 88-90 wwf run might have consisted of 45 minutes of ring time in its entirety. Sting matched that in 1 match with Flair. Plus I can't even imagine a Warrior vs Flair match. It would have been classically bad. Flair vs Sting feud was great.

Yeah, it's one time Gorilla Monsoon's "he literally got his head taken off" wouldn't be a malaprop.
