There are a lot of fat football players as well.

Nobody is making the claim that golf requires as much athleticism as football, or other sports.

Those fat football players can probably beat anyone on this board in a foot race.

And that has nothing to do with golf being a sport.

I have provided a dictionary definition of the word 'sport', and golf clearly qualifies. Choosing to deny this is foolish.

Chus, just so you know I am total agreement with all of your arguements today, thanks for carrying out the good fight. :D

Golf is a skill game, much like poker, darts, or bowling. Athletic prowess means little to nothing in the game. If you can drink and smoke while competing in the event, it's not a sport. I'm sorry if you disagree.

The bolded text is ludicrous. The best golfer ever (Tiger) is in tremendous physical condition.

So, the dictionary is incorrect?

There are fat football players, and fat baseball players. You can be overweight, and still have athletic ability.

John Daly is the 229th ranked golfer in the world. Rory, Tiger, and Donald are the top three, and they are all in great shape.

It takes some amount of physical ability, athleticism, and hand-eye coordination to hit a golf ball 300 yards.

Golf success is probably 90% dependent on how good your swing is, and maybe 10% on how strong you are. You don't see any body builders or steroid freaks of nature winning PGA tour events.

Obviously with a child vs. an adult player, strength would play a factor, but with regular adult males playing against each other, the more successful player would be the one with the better overall swing.

Daly was born in Carmichael, California. With his father, mother, older sister and older brother, he moved from California to Dardanelle, Arkansas when he was four, and he began playing golf the following year. He attended Helias High School in Jefferson City, Missouri, and was a letterman in football and golf. In golf, he was a Missouri state champion; he held and continues to hold several kicking records in football. He attended the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the golf team. He left college before completing his degree.[2

What do you shoot and no matter what you say, why aren't you better at it? Critique your swing for me if you don't mind.

Nailed it. Golf is fun. But mostly because you can drink, smoke and race cars at the same time.

Stop comparing it to poker. Poker doesn't even require the player to get up from a chair. If you want to keep going back to this, and deny a dictionary definition, it shows how poor your position is. I have never been physically exhausted after playing poker, even for twelve hours straight. My back and shoulders are sore after I golf.

Ping pong is a sport.

Fishing wouldn't require you to get up from a chair. Is that a sport?

I probably play 1 or sometimes 2 rounds a year.

A good day would probably be shooting 100-110, and I'm probably around 120ish on a normal day. I can hit the ball fairly well off the tee, and my short game is horrendously bad.

I don't really care what the dictionary says. It's just my opinion. If you can consume things that hinder your physical ability while competing (drinking or smoking), and your ability for success is not hindered, then I don't call it a sport*.

*Yes, I understand if you are fall down drunk, your game will be bad, but you would probably also have trouble walking. I'm just talking about having a couple beers during the round, so please don't take my comment out of context.

NBA players have smoked before games. So by your own definition, don't consider that a sport.

Stop trying to be peacemaker. :x :x :x

I have no problems with golf. It's a fun summer game, and a great way to bond with friends. It just kind of make me laugh when I see lists about the best athletes in the world, and someone like Phil Mickelson makes it. It's a little silly.

No, NBA players don't drink and smoke and race carts during games. That would be a thing though.
