Lots of passion. Canada/Mexico brawl, Big Z near meltdown, etc.

This is pretty cool even if US doesn't really care.

Lots of pride on the line in these countries.

This is not for the 9th inning bunt. Its from the late slide that blew the fuck out of the mexico ss or 2b who was covering the bag. The 9th inning blowout lead bunt gave them reason to give canada what they had coming.

I <3 all of the hyperbole going on between all the announcers I've heard on both MLB Network and ESPN America. Rick Sutcliffe stopped short of calling last night's triumph for Mexico as their most important victory since the alamo, and tonight after a shot of a happy dugout and a small patch of 10 WOOHOO-ing fans one of the MLB Network guys (Josh Levin?) boldly proclaimed "YOU THINK THIS IS AN EXHIBITION GAME?!?!?!"

yeah, cuz you know, there's so much national pride to be gleamed early in march when something like mostly-2nd-or-3rd-tier pitchers are out there going for up to ~3 innings at a time (or 45 pitches, whatever comes first) and the team that obviously would be the most dominant if everyone showed up / played-by-normal-national-team-assignment-rules -- the USA -- honestly doesn't give a shit about what's going on. I don't care if they escape pool play or whatever, if they make it to the elimination stages you know they're gonna have no chance when a Japan or Korea or Cuba comes along and those guys actually have their hearts in the game because, gasp, they have something to prove other than it's basically the pre-season before the real games start.

I've racked my brain for a few minutes and I can't come up with any ways to make this tournament any better unless MLB eventually finds a way to force teams to allow their players to go to this later in the season when pitchers are allowed to function normally. Until then, you can't take anything away from a tournament where the pitching (at least half and possibly even more than half of the game, depending on who you ask) is regimented LIKE IT'S GODDAMN SPRING TRAINING WHICH, NEWS FLASH, IT IS.

also, shomer shabbos * pounds table * -- I'm going to resume watching USA/Italy and having these announcers tell me just how awesome and great and serious and not-exhibition this tournament is.

I like it and unfortunately as Americans we or the vast majority of players don't care. That was a great atmosphere last night for the Domican Republic/Puerto Rico game, and the players from the other countries definitely think it is a big deal. Every 4 years is fine, wouldn't want it more often than that though.

Because the players, specifically the pitchers aren't ready. Then you do this then, and they have to get ready and then shut themselves down again to get ready for another year, it just wouldn't work.

I watched the USA vs Canada game to get a look at Jameson Taillon who was pitching for Canada even though he was born in Florida and went to high school in Texas. He looked real good against a stacked USA lineup. The Pirates are going to be a thing in a couple years.

I think the Royals had it first.

They certainly have arms... and pitchers will bust. TINSTAAPP aside, they look a little thin in position prospects.

I don't know about that. SS Allen Hanson and OF Gregory Polonco took giant steps forward last year, OF Barrett Barnes has legit speed/power combination and OF Josh Bell has a tremendous upside with 5 tool potential. Plus they have the 9th and 14th picks in this years draft. The Pirates aren't going to be fun to play.

The moral of the story is that Canada is much tougher on illegals than America.

Watched the U.S./Puerto Rico game last night and really looking forward to the Dominican game tomorrow night. Winner advances on and the loser will still have a chance.

I did say to Hawg Jr., why are they having this game in Miami? Have it in a baseball town and that thing would have been packed. Hell you could have had it here in Milwaukee and it would have been standing room only, Miami is just a horrible sports town.

I get the fact that it's March and they want to have it somewhere warm but yeah Miami is a terrible sports town. Why didn't they just have it in Atlanta to make sure nobody showed up.

Who in Milwaukee would go to this? I'd be willing to bet that 95% of the population up there doesn't even know the World Baseball Classic exists.

I wager that 95% also don't know about silverware.

When they moved the Indians and I forget who it was here due to weather out in Cleveland a few years ago, over 25,000 people showed up for each game. They would support it without a doubt. This is not the Bucks, this is a pretty good baseball town and you can see by the Brewers attenance the last several years.

Yeah, but have they had young studs like Travis Snider since 1996? Or what about that Sterling Marte dude that everyone loves cuz he hit a HR in his first at bat?

You won't be singing that song of mockey when Garrett Jones shows you what "for real" is, making his 1/2 season in 2009 look like child's play. Besides, I saw a commercial that they won the world series last year and since TV never lies, I'm going all-in on Andrew McCutchen for first ballot HOF. THE PEDRO ALVAREZ ERA IS HERE, FRIENDS, REJOICE ACCORDINGLY!

I'm not sure how much of a home field advantage Team USA had last night in their 7-1 win over Puerto Rico, let alone what they'll have tomorrow night vs. Dominican Republic considering the fact Marlins Park in Miami is hosting Round 2 of the World Baseball Classic. Watching a little bit of that last night, it did feel kinda weird, even when Marlins' President David Samson joined MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian & John Smoltz for commentary in the 4th inning.

Can someone explain why Giancarlo Stanton is hitting eighth? Do they just jumble up names in a hat?

I have no idea. Ask Jim Rockford, I mean USA manager Joe Torre.
