Bears and Bushrod's agent working out a long-term deal.

Bears in battle for left tackle Bushrod
By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter
5:03 p.m. CDT, March 12, 2013

The Chicago Bears are “battling” for the services of left tackle Jermon Bushrod, an NFL source told the Tribune.

The Bears agreed with tight end Martellus Bennett on a four-year contract at the outset of free agency Tuesday and have maintained a focus on Bushrod, whom the New Orleans Saints are intent on keeping. Bushrod developed in New Orleans under new Bears offensive coordinator/line coach Aaron Kromer.

Bushrod, 28, has made 62 starts over the previous four seasons for the Saints and is easily the top target for New Orleans, which has a history of letting interior offensive linemen depart via free agency. He is a two-time Pro Bowl performer but was graded similarly to Bears left tackle J’Marcus Webb this past season by Pro Football Focus.

Earlier, the Bears made a strong push to sign Phil Loadholt before the right tackle re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings. According to a source, the Bears made a big financial offer. Loadholt would have projected on the right side for the Bears while Bushrod would replace Webb.

The bolded part makes me nervous. I would be lying if I said I knew anything about this guy other than he played for the Saints. Where is Irish Boy to tell me how much I should hate this move.

The comparison to Jamarcus Webb is worrisome.

Well whoever our cap guy is, Cliff Stein or something, is going to earn his money. Good thing everyone says he's one of the best at it. Too bad our drafts have sucked so much we have to go this route.

1st signing today that I really don't like. Bushrod to #Bears. Brees made him look good. Can't hold the edge.

At first I read that as Matt Millen and I was excited to get a guy he didn't like. Then I re-read it and now I am sad.

Even though he started every game in the last 3 years and made two pro bowls at left tackle? I'll trust Kromer and co. that this is an upgrade, at very least.

Matt Miller ‏@nfldraftscout

#Saints now have a massive hole at LT. Bushrod to Chicago, Charles Brown not capable of starting.

Okay...

Too bad for Charlie Brown. He never got to kick the football.

Yeesh. Good thing we have 2 first round pick tackles so we don't need to pay 36 million $ for a FA tackle, wait...shit.

Very happy with this signing.

 Amazing how some are already bitching.

The Bears need to get anyone they can on the OL to help.

NOOOOO not that guy

I find it amazing that you basically make this same post with each and every Chicago team signing.

Because it constantly amazes me. People bitch to sign someone then when a team does they bitch that it is not the right signing.

Bitching bitches.

Got it bitch?

Bears had made a call to Bryant McKinnie in case this deal didn't come together. This is a better alternative.

Bushrod isn't perfect, but it's a good sign that Kromer likes how he is developing.

Ok. To your original point:
People bitch to sign someone then when a team does they bitch that it is not the right signing

how many times can we really say "it WAS the right signing?".

Not many really. Maybe the bitches were bitching... correctly?

It goes the other way too. B and B were talking him up pretty good and you hear about the pro bowls but you look closer and see some red flags.

There are sites that have him ranked right near Webb

I think its a good signing but its no slam dunk

Maybe it won't be the right signing. But no one knows right now. So it is entirely stupid to bitch all season and offseason that the Bears need to get help for the OL and then when they make an effort to do that very thing by getting one of the best lineman available to then turn around and bitch that it isn't the right one...

Not just black and white. Sure OL help was signed but dude got overpaid.

I'm a fan of his negotiating and free agents signing too. He's doing a great job of fucking the cap up.

No way do you know enough about the cap issues to be able to say this with any confidence.

According to most sources the Bears cap dude does a great job of working this stuff.

I never said people cannot have an opinion. But when your opinion is they need to get help and then you bitch when they do that very thing, then you are stupid

They addressed the need with someone who by some metric was comparable to Jamarcus Webb.

I don't think it's stupid to have questions about the move.
